This is the Digest from 2002 for the Category of: Alara Rogers Award For Best Author

41JustVisiting
I enjoyed JV's work and I think she's one of the strongest writers in the ENT fandom. I shout at anyone who will listen that Discoveries is a must read, but she brings a thoughtfulness to her other work that I appreciate as well.

13Bill Livingston
I've really enjoyed the humorous stories I've read so far.
-- Taryn Eve - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 10:54:16 -0400

44Kelhapam (PJ in NH)
I've really enjoyed PJ's R/S stories. She shows the 'ship in a playful manner.
-- Taryn Eve - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 10:56:03 -0400

41JustVisiting
I really like JV's work. Alpha Shift is an interesting read.

I really like JV's work. Alpha Shift is an interesting read.

38Jemima
Jemima has a quick wit, a great filking muse, and a knack for writing darn good Voyager fic, especially anything featuring the Borg. I imagine her coming out of her regeneration chamber and uploading her fic via a direct connection to the internet.
-- Lori - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 14:43:07 -0400

76Seema*
She won't win, but I'm commenting anyway. It's Seema's fault I've become more involved in various lists and chats. It's also her fault that I've started to send more feedback and be a halfway decent member of fandom. It's probably also her fault that she's one of the nicest, most helpful fans I've had the pleasure to correspond with. I've thoroughly enjoyed her fic, what little there is of it from last year, and I'm hoping she continues to write, and write more! All her stories are faithful to the canon characters, and the care she takes in realizing them is obvious. She's also a great beta and thankfully insufficiently reluctant - a credit to the fandom any way you look at it. Here's hoping for more fic from Seema this year!
-- Lori - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 14:46:54 -0400

70Rocky
Rocky has a flair for Voyager, no question about it. I've enjoyed some (not nearly enough) of Virtual Season 7.5, all of Glory Days, and I don't even watch the series. And, quite aside from her excellent writing, she's also a very encouraging and discriminating beta, whose suggestions have made a huge difference in that last novel I wrote, and have produced some promising plot bunnies for this year. I'm sure I'm not the only one she's taken time out of her busy RL to dispense writerly first aid to -- hats off to Rocky for being a consistent and positive force in the fandom.
-- Lori - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 14:53:29 -0400

27Djinn
Over the past year I have been continually astonished and delighted by how prolific Djinn has been. Very few authors move with equal ease between the characters and settings of all 5 series like she does. No pairing or character (canon or OC) is too 'out there' for her; she makes them all work, seemingly effortlessly. I'm hard put to declare a favorite among all her stories this year, even within an individual series. They're all winners in my book, as is Djinn herself.
-- Rocky - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:15:20 -0400

45Kelly Chambliss
Kelly is the most polished and lyrical writer active on the newsgroup. I never tire of looking at Janeway through her eyes, and in her entries this year, "Starlight", "Swing Time", "Chakotay and It" and "Impress", Kelly has given us some new and unusual pairings as well as some interesting perspectives on the 'tried and true' ones. Every Kelly story is a masterpiece.
-- Rocky - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:17:15 -0400

85Trexphile
Trexphile has produced a series of excellent stories over the years. She only produced one in 2002 – Not Good Not Good at all – but it was memorable and enjoyable. It’s good to be cheered up by Fan Fiction.
-- Catherine - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 17:34:54 -0400

70Rocky
I enjoyed “RANK HAS ITS PRIVILEGES”. The dialogue was fun and in character.
-- Catherine - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 17:57:57 -0400

11Boadicea
I just don't have the words. Her Voyager fic is amazing. Like, wow. The intelligence and the sense of character that she shows is utterly amazing. I worship at her delicate feet.
-- nostalgia - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 21:17:03 -0400

27Djinn
Djinn is freakishly good and yet pretty prolific. She gets the writing just right, just balanced enough to be new without being OOC.
-- nostalgia - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 21:18:44 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
Another really good writer. A great understanding of the characters, a nice line in writing. Fab.
-- nostalgia - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 21:20:02 -0400

19Christina
Really good with the words. Nice understanding of the importance of character.
-- nostalgia - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 21:24:14 -0400

92Yvonne Harrison (Fanfic Chick)
Amazing talent here. Return to Sender was one of the most vivid and bitter stories I read all year. And one that didn't leave me a few days after I read it. Well done!!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:32:33 -0400

88Ventura33
From chasing down werewolves to cadet Borgs at Academy keggers, from a crash landing at Tara to several homes for children that most would rather forget, Ventura33 delivered some fine work this year. Her characters are so vividly drawn, her work both funny and touching. I admire most her ability to bring a character alive in a very short space, sucking us in so that we just have to keep on reading. She can do anything and make it real, and she can blend humor and pathos in the same story as witnessed in Imprinted and Guide, her lovely story about the oft-neglected Kasidy Yates.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:34:24 -0400

85Trexphile
Gave us the wonderfully funny outing, Not Good Not Good at All. Please do more in the future! There is enormous talent at work here.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:34:55 -0400

80the stylus
Pot Kettle Black was an inspired story from The Stylus. I loved it so much and can't wait to see what this author has planned next.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:36:02 -0400

79Temporal Rift
La Belle Dame Sans Regrets was one of the most lilting and graceful stories posted in 2002. I love everything about it! Please do more in 2003!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:36:24 -0400

77Sisko2374
I thought that Sarah was an inspired story, and loved the way it played around with time and how it circles and erases. Great work.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:37:08 -0400

76Seema*
Yeah, I know she's already won the award for Best Author and therefore is not eligible, but I want to give a nod to an author that had a stellar year and never disappointed me in all the lovely work that she offered up. There aren't many authors that are as consistent or as talented as Seema. And I have to give another nod to her for her work, along with series creator Rocky, on the Glory Days series. Just stupendous. She gave us an ending scene in Act of War that I will never, ever forget! In the Absinthe Heart, Seema gave us an amazing look at the Daxes through the eyes of Quark--not an easy thing to do and in second person to boot! And then there was the wonderfully twisty An Inconvenient Attraction. I love this story so much! You had a great year, Seema! Congratulations and keep on writing!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:37:30 -0400

73Saavant
Lovely Saavik voice. Saavant is a fine author that needs to write more . Good luck in 2003!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:38:42 -0400

71RoseKira (Ananke)
RoseKira has a lovely voice, and one that is often used to turn a character or pairing on its ear. I loved the seemingly effortless way this author twists the Trek characters without breaking them!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:39:07 -0400

70Rocky
The Glory Days saga alone would be worth shouting about. This series was so ambitious and brave in the way Rocky and coauthor Seema were willing to tackle the darker, not so pretty, sides of life. Bravo for taking a chance and delivering an excellent and unique series. Rocky also offered us Janeway/Chakotay & Paris/Torries in VOY, a drabble in TOS, a look at Picard's vacation in TNG, and the touching Foolish and the Brave in DS9. She also found time to work on the Voyager Series 7.5 stories. I admire such strong output. Here's to more in the coming year, Rocky!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:39:28 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
With a lovely selection of Original Series fiction to pick from it is difficult to say which was my favorite. Certainly Weeds, Rabble Rouser's ode to Marla McGiver was the most powerful But I also loved the different twist that Heart Line took, the slightly more whimsical note to the writing. Kith and Kin brought us a new look at McCoy and his relationship with his family and with Kirk. And speaking of Kirk , Rabble Rouser gave us the lovely Aridity, a wonderful look at why Janice Rand left the ship, and Goodnight Sweetheart, a bittersweet and heartbreaking examination of Kirk and Edith Keeler. She also proved she could write comedy! Rabble Rouser has the ability to take a character that you are sure you know and understand and make you take another look. Her prose is beautiful, her narratives clean and clear, and her dialogue great. I'm honored to beta her work, and it's a treat too, because I get to be the first to read it. Rabble Rouser, you rock!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:40:24 -0400

64Penny Proctor
Penny Proctor is a voice that I miss. I've not kept pace with the Series 7.5 stories, so I know I've missed some excellent work by Penny. I had to make do with the lovely and haunting Oasis--a wonderful Janeway/Chakotay story that explores the depths and breadth of true love. Penny, I hope you do more fic in 2003, because I love your stories!!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:40:52 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
Paula gave us so many wonderful stories, some of them were witty drabbles that packed so much more into those 100 words than seems possible. Others were longer works like the lusciously dark and evil The Captain's Woman or the original character story You're Lucky I'm a Civilized Man featuring Alex Sawalha. Paula's style is sure, her prose clean and rich and sparkling with detail and excellent dialogue. In short, it's wonderful. Can't wait to see what else Paula Stiles does in Trek this coming year.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:41:58 -0400

58monkee
Monkee is a true talent, who can combine detail with snappy dialogue and excellent characterizations. My favorite is Her Strut, which so unerringly captures the voices of all the Enterprise regulars. The Man in 119 is a close second, with a fun POV and lovely prose--hard to forget this one. She can do lighter pieces too, like Peacock Blue, Birth of the Federation, and Advice from Someone Who's Been There. But her biggest strength lies in her ability to bring to life a character that we only saw for a moment, such as Melanie in Anachronism or Lily Sloane in One Friendship. Great year, monkee!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:42:34 -0400

52Lori
Lori delivered another great year of Next Generation work. Her Blemishes is a hilarious send up of the movie Nemesis--I'm still laughing at some of the scenes. And I loved Pilgrim, a dark and haunting look at the Picard/Troi dynamic. Well done, Lori!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:43:37 -0400

46Kelly Meding
Alternity is one of the best crossovers I've read and flawlessly blended ENT and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Color me impressed with this author and looking forward to her next outing!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:47:08 -0400

45Kelly Chambliss
When I read a Kelly Chambliss story, I know that I will be in for a treat. Usually one that has a dark side, or a twist in it. But sometimes, as she proved in Swing Time, it is just a downhome happy outing that proves delightfully satisfying. Chakotay and It was both whimsical and twisted, and that's a combo I wouldn't expect to see. But in Kelly's sure hands, it works, and works well! In Impress she gave us a view of Janeway via the eyes of Kai Winn, a lovely dark tale. And lovely she coauthored the amazing Going Away with Boadicea, a story that blew me away. Dark seems to be a theme, and I love that. Kelly Chambliss isn't afraid to go after the underbelly of a character or a pairing, and I love that! She has never failed me yet!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:47:28 -0400

40Jungle Kitty*
Just a quick non-counter to note that Jungle Kitty has given us another wonderful year of humor. I hope there are more laugh out loud moments in the future!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:48:03 -0400

38Jemima
What a year this author has had! How does she do it? Nothing is out of her range--long, short, funny, or rip your heart out drama. She can do funny as in the laugh out loud Beta Energy, or Than Fade Away. She can do romantic (if somewhat bittersweet) Janeways/Chakotay as in Thrive and HoneyDew. But most especially she can do dark and she can do the Borg. The Lamn'rau was an amazing treatment of the Hansen's doomed expedition to find the Borg, and in it Jemima gives us a most amazing look at this family. In What's Left of Her, Jemima takes a "what if" corner and shows us the AU end to Unimatrix Zero and in the process delivers one of the most stunningly written EMHs I've ever read. I'm just so impressed with the quality of Jemima's fiction, and I heartily say "Congratulations" and "Where the hell's the next story?"
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:49:10 -0400

20Christinecgb
Such talent this author has. And I keep seeing things that say ze isn't going to be writing Trek anymore. Say it isn't so!! I love the darkness and twisty goodness of a Christinecgb story! Like the haunting and hard The Albatross, in which we see the cost of quests and adventure. Or the lovely Accidental Suicide, which shows us another Janeway. I hope to see this author's name on many more stories!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:49:53 -0400

16Cait N.
Cait has given us some sweet and often funny stories this year. I look forward to more next year!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:51:18 -0400

11Boadicea
Going Away was an adventure in consciousness and luxe writing. Amazing story and an amazing author. Looking forward to more next year!
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:52:46 -0400

8Alara Rogers*
Realize this doesn't count, since the award is named after this author , but wanted to say that no one does Q (any of them) like Alara Rogers does. And she does a mean Picard too! I hope we see more of these stories in the coming year from this talented author.
-- Djinn - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 22:53:51 -0400

38Jemima
Everyone knows that Jemima is without equal when it comes to filking, but she's no slouch when it comes to stories either. She has a better understanding of Seven than any other writer I know, as evidenced by her various Borg-themed stories this year. And she's also written some very sweet J/C tales.
-- Rocky - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:50:20 -0400

52Lori
I truly can't think of TNG without immediately thinking of Lori. I don't think I've ever seen anyone handle Troi and Picard so well, both separate as well as a couple. I'm also continually fascinated by Lori's creative process, the way she layers so many things together to form a wondrous tapestry of a story, with every thread in place. She is truly among the best there is on ASC.
-- Rocky - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:51:22 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
In addition to being one of the best--and most prolific--feedbackers there is, Rabble Rouser showed once again what a way she has with Kirk and the rest of the TOS gang. I thoroughly enjoyed "Weeds", "Good Night Sweetheart" and "Aridity" and look forward to what she's going to give us in the coming year.
-- Rocky - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:52:19 -0400

76Seema*
This doesn't count, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention Seema as one of the best authors of the year. I am continually amazed by her sheer range, the way she gets inside the characters' heads, and how even the setting is a full-fledged character in one of her stories. As a beta, Seema has no peer (she has a real knack for picking up on things I miss) and as a co-writer she is incredible. I don't think I've ever had so much fun as a writer as I have when we're bouncing ideas off each other and can barely type fast enough to keep up with the inspiration flowing back and forth. Seema is one of the best there is.
-- Rocky - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:54:22 -0400

27Djinn
Djinn had a wonderful and very well-rounded year, with stunning entries in all the series. I've only now been able to read "It Wouldn't Be Make-Believe" and Djinn's definitely captured the whole DS9 gang in this one. She's made Vic an accessible character rather than an interesting holosuite personality; she made him real. The story also provides a refreshing POV on the events that happened outside the holosuite. "Chance Encounter" was another piece that I found to be an excellent example of Djinn's work this year. It really shows her grasp of character and voice in a unique situation. The post-Nemesis fics that Djinn wrote, though, were what really drew me to her and have stuck with me. Thank you, Djinn, for all the fantastic stories this year!
-- Sara - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 04:22:08 -0400

14Bridget Cochran
I first read Bridget's fic over three years ago, when I came across her classic J/P story, "Life's Challenges." Despite all the excellent Janeway fiction written since then, this story remains one of my favorites. Not only does Bridget create a compelling AU, but she does it with fascinating, re-invented characters who still retain the essence of their canon selves. It's a triumph. Since then, I've enjoyed reading Bridget's other pairings, including this year's ENT story.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:07:23 -0400

20Christinecgb
Christine writes an excellent Janeway. The stories she wrote this year are among my favorites of hers. "The Albatross" uses an effective central metaphor to create a J/C that is still believable, even in the post-VOY universe. And "Accidental Suicide" is another gem -- a well-written J/f story in a world that has far too few of them. Please come back to VOY, Christine!
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:45:04 -0400

27Djinn
One of Djinn's many strengths is how well she writes in so many different fandoms. I came to her work through her Voyager stories, and I liked them so much that I read and liked her DS9 stuff and even her Spock/Chapel fic. (I'm not a huge TOS fan, though I do like Spock.) This year, Djinn pleased my VOY soul with the atmospheric "Day of the Dead" and what is surely the best Seven story of the year, "Alone."
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:51:59 -0400

37janezy
On her website, janezy notes that she's been writing a lot of "darker, angsty" stuff -- which is just what I want to hear. I particularly enjoyed her "Saving Strangers," with its careful, believable depictions of the same-but-different Admiral and Captain Janeways. The Admiral/Chakotay relationship was exceptionally well-done.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:59:21 -0400

38Jemima
Jemima is another of those writers who has an amazing range -- she can do humor, drama, short pieces, epic pieces, and of course, filk. I love last year's "The Museum," and this year, her masterpiece (for me) is the incomparable "Janeway: The Musical." But really, all of Jemima's filks are a pleasure.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 19:04:41 -0400

58monkee
Even among the many excellent VOY writers, monkee stands out. Since 1997, she has consistently written some of the best Trekfic around. Although I know her primarily as a Janeway writer, she is equally at home in TOS and ENT. Monkee can do everything -- Janeway/Paris friendship stories, yearningly romantic J/C, episode codas that make me wish TPTB would hire her NOW, amazingly sexy J/C and J/Ka, laugh-out-loud humor (that one about the Seven/Barbie action figure. . .), EMH stories, spot-on sketches of the ENT characters. . .I could go on, but my point is that in her range, her versatility, and her longevity, monkee is one of the most talented Trek writers we have. I would love to see her win this richly-deserved award. (I mean, the woman gave us Chakotay/Chell slash, for cryin' out loud! What more do we want?)
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 19:11:42 -0400

64Penny Proctor
Penny is one of the most accomplished, thoughtful fanfic writers I know. I love her complex, revealing legal fictions, such as this year's "In the Course of Justice." And "Oasis" is an evocative, bittersweet J/C. I thought she'd have a hard time topping "Revisionist History," but Penny just keeps getting better.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 20:00:15 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
When you read her excellent TOS/VOY crossover, "Double Back," you'd never guess that Rabble Rouser is not primarily a VOY writer. She creates a believable, likeable Janeway and Tuvok -- and manages to pair them realistically, too. In fact, the strength of this story has made me put RR at the top of my list of non-VOY writers to read, in that mythical future when I have the time.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 20:09:31 -0400

70Rocky
I hardly know where to start in commenting on Rocky, except to say that I'm glad she has turned her talent and her careful craft to VOY writing. Her grasp of character is both broad and deep, so that a story arc such as "Glory Days" works like a faceted jewel, providing new perspectives and layers with every chapter. I'm particularly fond of Rocky's Janeway/Tuvok friendship stories, such as this year's "Stand By Me."
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 20:23:02 -0400

76Seema*
Yes, I know Seema is not eligible. But she's still a great writer! This "Glory Days" year in particular, I want to acknowledge her contributions.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 20:43:28 -0400

80the stylus
Although she hasn't written much this year, the stylus will always rank as one of the best Janeway writers. Her Janeway is angsty and layered, admirable and troubled, and really sexy -- all the things I like about the character. This year's "Pot Kettle Black" is typical of the stylus -- perceptive, beautifully worded, memorable.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 21:16:10 -0400

6anne in chicago
I enjoyed anne in chicago's take on P/K. Her "missing scene from the Killing Game" is probably one of my favorite P/K stories ever.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:30:33 -0400

7Annie M
Annie M has always ranked among my favorite Voyager writers. She has such a lovely way of writing the characters and of showing off new facets of their personalities. "The Final Candle" was a lovely story and I hope that Annie writes more in 2003.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:31:52 -0400

10Barbara Watson
Barbara Watson is one of the best P/T writers out there. She really gets under the skin of the characters. I love her "Dots" series and "Friendly Fire" was no exception. Barb blends canon with her on material seamlessly. I also loved her "Letters to Neelix," for its look at life apres Voyager. Great job this year, Barb!
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:33:24 -0400

11Boadicea
Boadicea has a unique storytelling ability and her perspective on the characters is always illuminating. Hope to see more from her this year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:36:39 -0400

15C. Zdroj
Chris is hands down one of my favorite O/K writers and her stories are lyrical, hot, and sexy. I really enjoyed "Edge of the World" this year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:37:59 -0400

16Cait N.
Cait's stories are always fun. unpredictable and interesting. No two of her fics are ever the same. My favorite of hers this year was "Adagio," not in the least because of the reason *why* Chakotay was at summer school.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:39:10 -0400

19Christina
Christina has done a wonderful job with VS7.5. She does a good job of blending action with humor. I really enjoyed "Into the Night: A Below the Decks Story." Bravo, Christina.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:41:21 -0400

20Christinecgb
Christinecgb is one of those amazing writers who never fails to take my breath away with the strength of the stories she creates. Christine's style is beautiful, poignant and lyrical. What I love most about Christine's fanfiction is that she manages to convey emotion. She's got terrific one-liners and at the same time, really, really knows how to concentrate on the details that bring out the most in a scene. I really hope that "The Albatross" - which is probably one of my favorites by Christine *ever* - isn't Christine's swan song to Trek. So, Christine, pretty please more?
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:44:21 -0400

23Cybermum
Cybermum has always amazed me with her ability to rhyme, but she also writes complex and wonderful adventure fic with VS7.5. I really enjoyed her efforts on "Olympian Efforts."
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:45:20 -0400

25Deede
Deede is a lovely and lyrical writer in P/T. "Irrevocably Tied" is probably my favorite out of all the P/T fic she posted this year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:46:39 -0400

27Djinn
Okay, it's impossible to even know *where* to start with Djinn, but she has had an absolutely phenomenal year. I'm in awe of what Djinn has done this year with her absolutely amazing talent. Djinn was all over the place this year in terms of the fandoms she was writing in. From drabbles to long, complicated tales, Djinn can truly do anything and the quality of her fic is always consistent – you can always count on a good read from Djinn. From TOS to MIS, she had stories in every series category. Her "Nemesis" based fics were among my favorites in TNG this year, especially "Collateral Damage." In VOY, both "Day of the Dead" and "Alone" were wonderful in their characterizations and emotion. Djinn shined in TOS - I won't be forgetting her "Blood Debt" any time. In DS9, Djinn did what I thought was impossible – make Vic Fontaine a three-dimensional character *create* a viable and wonderful romance with Ezri, all coupled with a riveting Section 31 plot. So congratulations on a truly wonderful year, Djinn, and here's to hoping that 2003 is just as wonderful for you.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:58:08 -0400

31Gabrielle Lawson
It was good to see Gabrielle back this year. No one writes Julian the way she does. Good luck with finishing "Faith."
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:58:53 -0400

28Dr. Jekyl
This was the first year I read fic by Dr. Jekyl and realized what I'd been missing all along. "Bork" was so much fun and I loved the poignancy of "Star Bright." Great job!

35Jamelia (J.A. Toner Janet)*
Jamelia has done amazing work on VS7.5. She does complex characterizations and no detail is too small. I also really enjoyed Jam's ENT fics this year. Her fic made me see the possibilities for Reed/Sato. My favorite Jam fic this year was "Many Happy Returns."
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:02:59 -0400

37janezy
Once again, I have to thank the Awards for pointing me to an author whom I might have otherwise missed. janezy's Janeway/Chakotay stories were very good and illuminated the pairing skillfully. Of the wonderful fic janezy posted this year, "Hollow" was my favorite for its startling revelation about Janeway. Bravo and hope to see more from you next year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:05:54 -0400

38Jemima
Wow. Jemima has had an absolutely spectacular year. First, few people can filk as well as jemima. My favorite filks this year would have to be "Where is the Fic?" and "I've Grown Accustomed to the Phage." Not only does jemima do a spectacular job of scanning, she has an intelligent sense of humor and irony both that underlies both her filks and her fiction. While her filks were spectacular this year, I really enjoyed her stories as well. Jemima writes Seven beautifully and "The Lamn're" is one of those stories I won't easily forget. It was poignant, especially in reflection of what we know about what happened to the Hansens. "Thrive" was a wonderful explanation of where that Borg baby had got to all these years but what really took my breath away was "What's Left of Her," which was probably a more realistic ending to what TPTB gave us in "Unimatrix Zero." Jemima is another one who manages to cut right to the heart of the matter with her one-liners. You've had a terrific year, jemima, so thank you for the fic and please, more for next year?
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:09:28 -0400

39Julie Evans
Julie is one of my favorite VOY authors of all time and I really enjoyed "Hero for the Times," which features Julie's wonderful characterization and attention to detail. "An Olympic News Brief" was timely and a lot of fun. Great job, Julie.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:10:50 -0400

40Jungle Kitty*
I know JK isn't eligible for this Award, but I just have to give her a nod for her Kerensa fics which had me on the floor laughing.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:11:40 -0400

45Kelly Chambliss
Kelly is an amazing and wonderful writer. She makes pairings that I never thought possible possible. Her fic is always sexy, seductive, revealing, intriguing, and always different. When Kelly mentioned that she was working on a Neelix/Janeway/Seven fic, I knew that if anyone could pull that threesome off, it would be Kelly. And indeed she and Boadecia did a wonderful job with "Going Away." I love the structure of that story - the drabble form with the alternating POVs - and how it manages to fit together to create a coherent story. And more importantly, Neelix is sexy! Kelly's Janeway/Kai Winn fic was another one of those pairings that only Kelly could pull off so beautifully. "Impress" was simply amazing in its characterizations or more importantly, what it said about Kai Winn. My favorite Kelly fic this year though had to be "Swing Time." I loved the humor in that story and Kelly writes a wonderful Janeway and Paris dynamic. She really knows how to explore the characters and bring out aspects of that that I never noticed before. It was definitely an impressive year for Kelly and here's to hoping that 2003 is just as wonderful as well. Great job, Kelly!
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:18:10 -0400

52Lori
Lori is truly a wonderful and ambitious writer. When I think of TNG authors, Lori is the first person I think of. Her stories are lengthy and complex. It's amazing how she keeps track of all the details and manages to maintain her characterizations. Lori makes writing Picard/Troi look so incredibly easy - I'm constantly in awe of how she manages to make it so believable and wonderful. "On the Madhouse Boards" is a perfect example of how Lori skillfully juggles plotlines and characters. There is so much going on in that fic yet Lori makes it all look effortless. The care and concern she takes and the attention to detail, not to mention the fact that she makes Troi a competent and wonderful Starfleet officer, her three-dimensional aliens, and amazing OCs - all of these things are the reasons why Lori is one of the best there is. Thanks for many happy hours of reading. I'm eager to see where you take all of these characters next year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:22:58 -0400

54Matt Edwards
I always enjoy Matt's fic, especially when he concentrates on the Dominion War. "Returning Home" is a must-read, especially given our current world situation. Matt has a way of really bringing the drama home. Terrific job this year, Matt.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:25:04 -0400

58monkee
monkee is one of the best authors there is and her versatility in all fandoms is something I personally envy. She also has a wicked sense of humor, in addition to her ability to create believe drama. I loved "Peacock Blue" and her "Advice from Someone Who Has Been There" was just pure fun, not to mention wicked. "The Last Nacelle" was a beautiful, beautiful story focusing on an underutilized character. I hope to see more from monkee this year as her fic is always a treat.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:26:58 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
Paula is a wonderful writer and I was really impressed by her drabble series, because she packed so much into such a little space. She has the ability use cutting lines to really convey a lot. In addition, "The Captain's Woman" was intriguing and I enjoyed "You're Lucky I'm a Civilised Man" very much. I loved "Have a Holly Jolly Unspecified Holiday" - what a riot! Paula is another author who does right by her OCs and canon characters both. Wonderful year, Paula, and here's hoping to more from you.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:29:02 -0400

63P. L. Heyes (DangerMom)
DangerMom is one of the premiere P/T authors - heck, Voyager authors - out there and she continues to please. I'm a sucker for post-Endgame fics and "One for the Family Scrapbook" is definitely one of the best out there. I love the vision of Miral going amok on a targ. Rumor has it that she has gone to another fandom entirely, but I'm hoping it's just a rumor. So thank you for all your wonderful fic, DangerMom, and I hope you come back to Trek in the future.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:32:26 -0400

64Penny Proctor
Penny Proctor is such a consistent and wonderful author. It doesn't matter what she writes, she pulls it off beautifully. I really envy how *easy* Penny makes it look. "Oasis" and "Earthrise" are some of my favorite fics by Penny this year, but I also really enjoyed her contributions to VS7.5, particularly the wonderful "In the Course of Justice." Penny is truly an asset to ASC and it's always a treat to see when she's posted a new fic to the newsgroup.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:34:06 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
Rabble Rouser did an amazing job this year and she wrote a fanfic that I won't forget anytime soon and considering among the most memorable of 2002 - the haunting, disturbing, beautiful "Weeds." Wow, that particular fanfic packed an emotional punch that I still remember so many months later. I also really enjoyed "Good Night Sweetheart." What amazes me about Rabble Rouser's fanfic is her attention to detail and her vivid descriptions. She manages to pack so much into her fanfic, give so many layers to the narrative that it's possible to reread a fanfic like "Weeds" and see something new and wonderful each time. When I was rereading "Weeds" and "Goodnight Sweetheart" for Awards, I was struck by Rabble Rouser's ability to really show, not tell. Her ability to really get to the heart of the characters, to demonstrate vividly what they are thinking and feeling is really inspiring. More than once, when reading through "Weeds" and "Goodnight Sweetheart," I kept thinking, 'Wow, I wish I could write like this!' Rabble Rouser had an amazing year and here's to hoping for more wonderful fanfic from her in 2003.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:39:48 -0400

69Rob Morris
No matter what he writes, Rob Morris always does something interesting. I've *almost* forgiven him for his 'pun-tastic' drabbles, but I did enjoy "Boiled in Their Own Pudding" as well.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:40:39 -0400

70Rocky
Rocky has had a spectacular and wonderful year. In 2002, she expanded into trying her hand in TOS, TNG, DS9 and NET. Her drabbles are fun and to the point and often with a 'punny' punchline. I loved "The Foolish and the Brave" coda to "The Valiant" because it was a scene that *had* to happen and Rocky managed to get everything that needed to be said into that coda. Well done. But it's in Voyager where Rocky truly shines and makes her mark. Rocky's Janeway characterization is among the best that there is. She has a soft spot for the Janeway/Chakotay pairing and "Quit" and "Easy" are both terrific additions to the J/C oeuvre. In addition, she wrote a very convincing Paris/Torres in "Repeat" and "Tom's Big Day." Rocky also keeps busy with VS7.5 and her output there – especially "Sinners and Saints" – is nothing less than wonderful. But it's as a co-writer and partner-in-crime that Rocky really shines. I can't say enough about what it's like to plot and scheme with Rocky and just how much fun she makes it. I'm truly honored and blesses that she allowed me to collaborate with her on "Glory Days" because it was probably *the* highlight of my fanfic career. It was just amazing to work with someone who is as focused and dedicated to her fanfic as Rocky is. Rocky is a wonderful beta as well because she takes just as much care with my fic as she does with her own. You've had a wonderful year, Rocky, and I know that what you did this year is just the tip of the iceberg. Congratulations on an amazing 2003.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:47:34 -0400

71RoseKira (Ananke)
RoseKira does an amazing job with angst. No one does it quite like RoseKira and she always manages to show me a side of the characters that I never thought of before. "Transitions" is probably my favorite; no one manages to hurt the characters as well as RoseKira does. Great job this year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:48:39 -0400

75SaRa
Good job with VOY fic this year, SaRa. "Dead" was an interesting perspective on Janeway.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:49:12 -0400

78Stephen Ratliff
Stephen works really hard to balance his writing with his work on the ASC newsgroup. He has a genuine love for both Marissa and the newsgroup. I'm always amazed when I hear of authors who create such an intricate universe for themselves and Stephen is no exception when it comes to creating a world that is uniquely his.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:50:34 -0400

55Meghan Elizabeth
Meghan Elizabeth is a long-time DS9 writer who does a wonderful job with Bashir. She's another person who writes a believable OC - Vicki Ann, in this case. Here's to hoping for more.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:51:21 -0400

79Temporal Rift
I loved Temporal Rift's P/C fic, "La Dame Sans Regrets." Just beautiful and lyrical language. I hope we see more from her this year.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:52:23 -0400

80the stylus
I love the stylus' writing style. "Pot Kettle Black" has to be one of my favorite VOY fics this year because it focused on Gretchen Janeway in a way that was revealing and poignant, but without being heavy-handed or melodramatic. Terrific job and please, more?
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:53:41 -0400

84Tracy Thurman
I really enjoy Tracy's J/C fic. "Time Standing Still" was excellent work. Here's hoping for more.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:54:52 -0400

85Trexphile
I loved Trexphile's "Not Good, Not at All." It was funny, sexy and a great deal of fun. Trexphile is probably one of the best Picard/Crusher writers out there. She remains absolutely true to the characters and never disappoints when she posts a new fic. Terrific job this year, Trexphile!
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 10:56:39 -0400

86Valerie Shearer
Valerie Shearer really knows how to keep true to history. Her "Alamo" is one of my favorite DS9 story and I'm really enjoying this year's "Legacy" because it's a really ambitious and I'm intrigued by the idea that Cardassia could win the Dominion War. Can't wait for this one to be finished.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 11:05:25 -0400

88Ventura33
Ventura33 is one of those authors who is unpredictable and fun every time she posts something new to ASC. She can write humor, crossovers, serious, whatever, with equal skill. Her ideas are creative and original and has a wicked sense of humor. "This Time of Month" was a fun drabble and "Casualities" really packed a punch. But my favorite Ventura33 fic this year - perhaps of all time - was "Imprinted." I loved her explanation of what happened to the Borg Baby. In "Double Kat," Ventura33 pulled off the Janeway/Janeway pairing with aplomb and managed to keep the characters straight - which doesn't seem like it could be that easy. Bravo on a great year!
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 11:09:19 -0400

90Whoa Nellie
Whoa Nellie is another person who is faithful to her one true pairing and she manages to keep it interesting every time she produces a new fic.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 11:10:59 -0400

92Yvonne Harrison (Fanfic Chick)
Yvonne Harrison is a wonderful author. "Return to Sender" was an excellent portrait of Tom. Yvonne has a sly sense of humor and a handle on Tom characterization. "Return to Sender" was meaty and just another one of those novels that made me think. Entirely too much. It's one of those fics I won't forget anytime soon. Great job this year, Yvonne.
-- Seema - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 11:12:28 -0400

88Ventura33
When I think of challenge stories, I always think of Ventura33. I enjoy the way Meg's mind works, taking the challenge situations and then crafting a response that is both unique and yet clearly within the challenge rules. It can't be easy to write a Tom Paris, Cyndi Lauper story! But Ventura makes it fun. She writes excellent non-humor stories, too.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 13:30:02 -0400

38Jemima
Jemima, filker extraordinaire and my favourite writer of Seven!fic this year. Her grasp of things Borg is fascinating and the way that she can take a canon event and turn it on end blows me away. Also, lest anyone forget, Jemima filked a whole musical! And she did an incredible job of it! "Beta Energy," though, was probably my favourite because it's so funny and so true. Thanks, Jemima, for a fantastic year of filk and everything else!
-- Sara - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 19:11:14 -0400

52Lori
Lori is the trek writer that pops into my head when I think TNG. She has such a grasp of these characters and her stories, even though they're AU, fit so perfectly into the TNG universe. "On the Madhouse Boards" is a spectacular piece of work, with lovely characterization. The initial scene, where Picard is in and out, still haunts me and makes me want to write like Lori when I grow up. "Pilgrim" is another story that really worked for me and that I really enjoyed. Thank you, Lori, and I can't wait to see what you do with these characters next year.
-- Sara - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 19:28:01 -0400

70Rocky
Rocky had a spectacular year with all of her Voyager stories and her spendid toe-dips into other series. The Glory Days universe was among my favourites this year and it was always such a treat to get a new one! Rocky's stories always manage to grab me and pull me into whatever tale she's weaving. As a result, she moves me, to laugh or cry or think or something else. I can always count on Rocky to provide me with a great read, whether it's a drabble I can read before school or an afternoon (or day) long read to soak in. Thank you, Rocky, and may next year be such a success!
-- Sara - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 19:33:51 -0400

76Seema*
Seema had a great year of writing and managed to come up with something spectacular in all the series save TOS. Her Glory Days stories were consistently lovely. The two Kira fics, "Blink" and "Sand and Water," were just fantastic and Seema provided us with wonderful insights into the character. Seema has such a respect for all of her characters, and for her readers, and it's always exciting to have another Seeema!fic to read. Thank you, for a lovely year of fic and I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve for next year!
-- Sara - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 19:40:16 -0400

78Stephen Ratliff
Stephen always amazes me with the way he's able to balance all the work he does for ASC with his own writing. Not only does he do this, but he's managed to create his own intricate universe. Congratulations, Stephen!
-- Sara - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 19:41:33 -0400

20Christinecgb
Christine has brought style to a pairing that desperately needs it. She said goodbye to J/C with a flourish that I won't soon forget.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:08:16 -0400

27Djinn
I enjoyed Djinn's TNG stories, even though they didn't involve P/T. Her Khan was a wonderful addition to Rabble Rouser's "Weeds," and in VOY she managed to find a fresh angle on the well-worn J/C pairing. My favorite story of hers this year was "Alone" - Djinn does a great Seven, and that makes a great author in my book.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:09:36 -0400

37janezy
Janezy has a great range and fresh ideas. I hope to see more from her.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:10:00 -0400

40Jungle Kitty*
I think I missed voting for JK's TOS/LotR crossover, but I thought it was a riot. I'm most familiar with her humor, like Monday Morning at the Anti-Matter Cooler - if her serious fic is anything like it I ought to be reading TOS.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:10:35 -0400

52Lori
She's still TNG to me. This year's novel proves that Lori can juggle an indefinite number of aliens, admirals, relationships and lower-decks crew, while her short stories remain among the best character pieces around. Paramount should beware of her parodies.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:12:35 -0400

58monkee
Monkee kept me laughing this year, even though I was unable to follow her into ENT.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:13:13 -0400

-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:14:54 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
I have to vote for RR because of "Weeds," even though I don't usually read the series she writes in and therefore have nothing else intelligent to say about her fic. "Weeds" was one of those stories that seems so obvious after the fact, but never would have occurred to you before the author made it so.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:15:44 -0400

69Rob Morris
I'd like to thank Rob for keeping the filk fires burning, and for his contributions to Voyager this year.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:16:14 -0400

70Rocky
I can open a story by Rocky and know that nothing weird or out of character is going to happen to the characters. She saw the same show I did, both in its serious and its laughable moments. She carried it on after the end with style both in VS7.5 and Glory Days. I have only one fear when I read Rocky's stories: puns. They're a small price to pay for such masterful writing.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:17:39 -0400

76Seema*
My favorite Seema story this year was "The Heart of the Matter," but I can't claim to have read everything. She walks the fine line between laughter and lynching with her J/C parodies, and her other contributions to Glory Days were equally impressive.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:18:15 -0400

88Ventura33
I love Ventura's humor. I may have missed the latest selection from Drone in the Dorm during MIS voting, but I consider it a fine addition to a great series.
-- Jemima - Sun, 27 Apr 2003 22:21:32 -0400

89VS 7.5 Writing staff
The best idea of how and what the characters are like.
-- Michele - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 11:54:56 -0400

76Seema*
Has a good grasp of who the characters are.
-- Michele - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 11:55:40 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
I've been a fan of Rabble Rouser's since a few years ago, when she posted her TOS/VOY crossover, "Double Back." I recently made time to read some of her straight TOS stories, and I wasn't disappointed. I was initially drawn to her Uhura story, "Heart Line," because its summary refers to one of my favorite, campy Uhura lines of all time -- "Captain, I'm frightened." I found an interesting, compelling story with an Uhura so much more complex and believable than she is in canon. The presence of Mitchell, the mention of Sato, the no-nonsense, practical nature of Uhura's thoughts all combine to offer a unique perspective on TOS characters.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 15:04:01 -0400

88Ventura33
Guide is a brilliant exploration of Kasidy post-WYLB, and one of the most underused characters in DS9 fic, considering how cool I think she is. So major props for that.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:27:11 -0400

86Valerie Shearer
Missing was pretty awesome, in that I loved the 'haunted, haunted' quality to Bashir's narration. Your long form work is great too, from the snippits I read--I need to make time for the rest of it. But I love the idea of skewing the way the Dominion War went, to make it messier, and more devestating than on television.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:34:02 -0400

83T'Lin
Mrow. Sisko and Kasidy rock my socks, what with the hot sex while watching taped porn. Just proving, life on DS9? Is all about the hot sex. Yay! The other snippits are just as hot, so I enjoyed them all.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:40:03 -0400

77Sisko2374
I think it's phenominal that most of your work centers around Captain Sisko, rather than another member of the crew. He's long missed his due as a character worthy of his own fiction, so for that, I salute you.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:56:14 -0400

76Seema*
Your Kira stuff this year has kicked my ass and left it wanting more. I particularly love Sand and Water, although Blink is great too. Also, who can hate Rocky Path? Probably the only time I've been sucessfully lured to completely read Voyager fanfic.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:58:15 -0400

70Rocky
I loved the Rocky Path series, so thanks for writing it.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 20:01:57 -0400

69Rob Morris
Some of the most clever crossovers, ever. Keep it up!
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 20:16:00 -0400

86Valerie Shearer
Valerie came back this year from a long hiatus with a story she's been working on for awhile--Legacy. It's been fun to see all the ideas that she's come up with in the meantime. Everyone notes that Valerie does dark, and she does, but another thing that she does that most people don't note is how she writes about parts of the Federation that you don't normally hear about--small colonies and planets outside the regions of Federation space, where people live hard and don't have all the nice things that they do back on Earth. She writes about the other side of Paradise, and something besides Starfleet. Not many Trek writers do that.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 20:50:46 -0400

54Matt Edwards
Matt didn't write much this year, but his entry showed a different side of the Dominion War. Matt likes to show the cost of war in human terms, and he is the only writer I've read so far who has successfully (to me) made Section 31 look sympathetic. Maybe not good, but at least sympathetic.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 20:52:53 -0400

69Rob Morris
Rob doesn't get nearly as much press as his output (and his creativity) justifies. He's a very dynamic writer whose big specialty is the wild-a**ed crossover. Pick a crossover that you're sure would never work and sure enough, Rob has made it work. He's a fun writer, and here's hoping he gets to finish his Ancient Destroyer cycle, which he's expanded this year.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:05:37 -0400

53Mark Russel Stanley
I owe Mark a vote, if only because he did Marky-Sue sequel, "Pride Day" after being asked nicely (he does requests!). Mark always has the capacity to make me laugh my a** off, even though he can also go pitch-black and chilling. He's definitely a no-miss author if you like either Garak or Bashir--or both.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:16:12 -0400

40Jungle Kitty*
Yeah, yeah. I know. We can't vote for her anymore, but I'm going to anyway. 2002 was the year I "discovered" JK. I'd been aware of her before, of course, and respected her as a veteran of the ng, but this was the year that I actually started *reading her stuff.* And, oh my dear Lord, is she funny. I'm definitely looking forward to what she comes up with next.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:18:57 -0400

58monkee
I first got to know monkee's style from her Enterprise reviews on Djinn's list, but I've enjoyed much of her Enterprise fic as well, this year--particularly, "Her Strut". She's good with characterisation and she certainly knows how to turn a phrase. I'd have to say that she is probably my favourite Enterprise author out there.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:21:03 -0400

76Seema*
Yep. Seema, bless her, is another no vote (gee, can't imagine why), but I'm going to anyway. She writes all series, and well, but my personal favourite this year was her chilling young Kira story in the DS9 series. It's all too easy to forget how cold-blooded Kira was as a terrorist, but Seema got all the bloodstained nuances and moral compromises down without flinching. Good job.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:25:59 -0400

27Djinn
Ah, Djinn. How could we possibly leave her off a Best Author's list? Short answer? We can't. Djinn writes often, writes all series and writes a *lot*. Even if you can't keep up with her total output, you're going to have a personal favourite of hers, or more likely, several. I think mine, for its chilling purity, is "Not All at Once." What's yours?

88Ventura33
Ventura is an author who likes to experiment a lot, different styles, different series. I like her humour best, myself, and usually the DS9 or TOS stuff, but she's equally good with serious and in other series. She's a creative writer with a keen ear for dialogue and voice and a biting wit of her own, that she somehow makes her characters', as well.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:33:17 -0400

65Rabble Rouser
RR has an impressive talent for writing unsympathetic characters sympathetically (this year is was Marla McGivers) and further, making other writers want to write about them, too. She's also got good timing with comedy and did a great, satirical collaboration with Djinn that was both funny and scary in equal measure (as most satires are).
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:45:05 -0400

31Gabrielle Lawson
I will probably repeat myself, but it's the thought that counts. Gabrielle is one of those authors that is makes you wait so long for stories so that when you finally get one, you know it's going to be good. The Faith trilogy has been especially torturous. She has such a grasp of the charaters that sometimes, my mind can't remember whether they were stories or actual episodes. The amount of time and effort put in the stories is amazing. How she does it with all the things she has to do is beyond me. Gabrielle is a tru professional, whether she's published or not.
-- Meghan Elizabeth - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:47:36 -0400

57Michael Roy Hollihan
Mike, a veteran writer on this ng, weighed in this year with an impressive new MIS series, new ship, new crew, not perfect but doing their jobs anyway. He's got a solid plot going there with some interesting back story on his OCs. Hopefully, we'll see more of it this coming year.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:51:41 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
Mrow for the sexy Mirror Universe. Good stuff.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:53:25 -0400

53Mark Russel Stanley
Mark is amazing because he can take something that the powers that be never intended to happen and make it possible. He has a great sense of humor about himself and is able to insert it into his stories, especially involving Stark. No many people can write Mary Sue-ish (can't remember the male version) and have it be something that the masses will read. He can be serious too, writing legitimate romances involving Garak and Bashir, not just contrived PWPS. He shows us facets of the characters that were never explored, or even allowed, during the shows run. Mark is a raregen in the Star Trek fandom.

49Kathryn Ramage
Kathryn was having fun this year, with her DS9 Mirror Universe take on "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf". The power politics of the Intendant and Mirror-Garak corresponded startlingly well to those of 60s academia and the unique Burton/Taylor pairing--at any rate, they did in the Kathryn's very capable hands. Great experiment.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:57:45 -0400

55Meghan Elizabeth
Meghan writes an OFC and a Bashir who are severely damaged by the Dominion War (albeit mostly functional) but who are also in love with each other and incurable romantics into the bargain. She writes them as people who are bitter, but who go on, anyway, trying to help others when they can barely help themselves.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:00:41 -0400

54Matt Edwards
A lot of very deep, insightful stuff about the nature of war. Which of course, is a theme that fits beautifully into DS9 fanfic. He makes good stuff, and I'm always glad to see it.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:03:55 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
Paula is unique, giving us both dark, hidden "personalities" of the characters and new, fully developed interesting original characters such as Alex Sawalha and his wife. She brought us Tom Riker and Ro Laren back and worked them into the story beautifully. She writes Bashir in a way no one else does. I'm always waiting to see what she'll write next.
-- Meghan Elizabeth - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:05:18 -0400

86Valerie Shearer
Valerie is another unique author. Instead of just giving us different sides of the characters, she gives us different paths as well. Her alternate realities or episode endings are brilliant and gripping. Although they don't necessarily have a happy ending and can be emotionally draining, they are tremendously well written. She could easily be a professional, if the powers that be agreed with her. She's not afraid to take risks with her characters and those risks are what create her wonderful stories. Valerie is one of the best writers I've seen and I feel privledged to have her help me with my writing.
-- Meghan Elizabeth - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:11:51 -0400

20Christinecgb
Christine's Accidental Suicide normally wouldn't be my cup of tea, but she did a really good job of making me believe the pairing (Shelby and Janeway) involved, one of the things that I've noticed in general with the Femme-FuhQ authors. She has a good ear for their voices, the plot is interesting without being soapy or exploitative and the characterisations of these two driven women are just right.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:13:47 -0400

27Djinn
Keiko/Kira/Miles...the threesome that was begging to be written. And pretty damn well, too. Loved the ideas behind "It Wouldn't Be Make-Believe" as well.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:41:12 -0400

18Creek Johnson & Nance Hurt
Very complicated, long and very intreging Odo and Kira fanfic. I always love to see how they turn out.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:46:01 -0400

15C. Zdroj
The steamest Odo/Kira author around. I believe I once said, "When I grow up, I want to be able to write smut like /that/." And I meant it, and still do.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:48:50 -0400

8Alara Rogers*
Heh, still the best Q writer around.
-- Tori Morris - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:51:50 -0400

27Djinn
I was blown away by the quantity and quality of Djinn's fic this year. Each story that I read had interesting plots full of twists and turns, wonderful, spot on characterizations, and pairings that initially seemed wrong, but turned out oh so right. Each fic is a gem and I am very glad I got to read them.
-- Jerie - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 17:07:23 -0400

10Barbara Watson
Barbara Watson has been one of my favourite P/T authors for a long time, and her stories never disappoint. This year, I liked "Letters to Neelix" best.
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:39:21 -0400

22Court
Court's "Before the After" was a cool story about a comment on the show that I've been wondering about too. :-) Her writing is excellent, and it's nice to see stories about this unusual couple.
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:39:39 -0400

27Djinn
Djinn is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. "Alone" is one of the most touching Seven stories this year, and I've read it more times than can be considered healthy. :-) I also adore her post-Nemesis fic, "Echos and voices" was wonderful, and I'm glad to see all of that unexplored angst be used well somewhere. "Collateral Damage" was a nice view on the rest of the crew, and her way of writing B-4 really got to me. Fantastic work!
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:40:00 -0400

38Jemima
Jemima is one of my new favourite authors, and I don't understand how I could have missed her before. "Thrive" was in fact the first of her stories I read, and it still remains one of my favourites. "What's left of her" is not only very touching and appropriately angsty, it provides an explanation to how the Borg works that makes much more sense that what Voyager ever gave us. Same thing with "Lamne'rau", where she eloquently manages to sort out the strange stardates we got in Dark Frontier. "Then fade away" is awsome in all its weirdness, and "The Efficiency Expert" is brilliant in the way she uses a very old and overused storyline, but manages to make it different and original.
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:40:47 -0400

71RoseKira (Ananke)
Rosekira has a tendency to write a lot of angst, so just the fact that I like her stories as much as I do must mean something, considering I tend to avoid that genre otherwise. She has a beautiful writing style, one that she isn't afraid to experiment with.
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:41:19 -0400

8Alara Rogers*
I enjoyed Alara's Amanda and Charlie X story quite a bit. She got them both down just right without parodying them or making it dark. Enjoyable and bittersweet.
-- Paula Stiles - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 21:55:30 -0400

38Jemima
Jemima can always be counted on for something different. I love that about her. She has a brevity of words and an understatement to her stories that is so refreshing and apealing. I'm trying to lure her into SG fic at the moment- we could use her - but I'll be happy to read whatever she posts here in the meantime.
-- Christinecgb - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 03:43:17 -0400

45Kelly Chambliss
Kelly is a sheer pleasure to read. Kelly has this amazing propensity to write stories about people who use sex as a weapon and a) makes them believable and b) makes them hot. I have been taking notes on Kelly's skill for writing sex since I started reading her stories (seriuosly) but it's possibly a gift because I still haven't achieved her knack. An absolute delight and a pleasure.
-- Christinecgb - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 03:46:28 -0400

70Rocky
If I ever get all the way through "Glory Days" i'll be sure to thank Rocky for that rather marvellous gift she (and Seema) gave to Voyager post "Endgame". I do like the way Rocky says what was never said in the series and thrashes out the conversations we really wanted to hear. Rocky's a wonderful asset to Trek fic and we're lucky to have her.
-- Christinecgb - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 03:50:44 -0400

88Ventura33
Ventura33 is another one of those incredibly versatile writers who does plot, angst, character pieces and sexual encounters. SHe's another author who can be counted on to produce something unusual and another author who I only ever catch up with at award time and for that, I'm sorry. Yet another writer who is always a pleasure to read.
-- Christinecgb - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 03:54:10 -0400

31Gabrielle Lawson
Gabrielle is the one person I know who can write in almost one draft. Her stories are slow in coming, but worth reading. I wish she could read more of mine without getting too depressed, but I like the element of trauma with a light way in the distance I find in her works. I am really looking forward to the next part of Faith (and Gabrielle knows why)>
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 14:51:09 -0400

54Matt Edwards
Matt hasn't written much this year, but his story of the other side of war, the timeless cost to the soul, is well worth it. And it is especially fitting for the times.
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 14:55:39 -0400

55Meghan Elizabeth
I've been reading and doing beta work for Meghan for a long time. She's improved so much its amazing. She always had the understanding of her characters, especially how they relate to each other, but there is much more polish to her style now too. I look forward to seeing her writing get better and better.
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 14:59:09 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
The most amazing thing about Paula is her versatility. She can do short, telling drabbles and full length stories equally well. She does satire like the Have a Happy, Jolly Unspecified Holiday and then rather dark things like Your Lucky I'm a Civilized Man. She does new looks on old charactrs, like the alternate universe tos story. And she's read and commented on almost all of my stuff, so I can credit her with part of the way I write. Thanks for the encouragement and help.
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 15:04:38 -0400

71RoseKira (Ananke)
RoseKira writes some wonderful angst. I especially like her shorter pieces.
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 15:06:23 -0400

76Seema*
Seema is a fantastic author, who always keeps a very high quality in her writing. I've never been disappointed by anything I've read from her, rather she keeps amazing me with every new story. Her participation in writing the Glory Days Universe is probably the best of her this year, though the rest of her stories, such as "A sense of permanence", have been excellent too.
-- Elise - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 17:21:16 -0400

70Rocky
I found Rocky through the Glory Days Universe, which she co-wrote with Seema. Since then, I've been in the process of reading the rest of her stories, and I have been amazed by how good they are. I especially love her drabbles, so short and still so poignant! But obviously, since Glory Days is what made me realize how talented she is in the first place, it's my favourite this year.
-- Elise - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 17:21:57 -0400

34Invicta
I loved Invicta's mystery story this year. I hope she'll continue to write both slash and gen DS9 stories.
-- Mark Stanley - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 17:22:02 -0400

49Kathryn Ramage
Kathryn Ramage is a fixture in Garak/Bashir slash, and her Sisko/Bashir makes me believe a pairing I'd never imagined. I hope she'll continue to grace us with her spot-on dialogue, her lovely prose, and her interesting plots.
-- Mark Stanley - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 17:23:42 -0400

76Seema*
Blink is the signature story of how the Kira we met in the first episode came to be, and the reason that no matter how much she grows, a little of that cold hard place will always remain. Seema has captured the moment of transition in this story, and it serves as a wonderful example of her talents to pick just the right moment to drop in on a life.
-- Valerie Shearer - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 19:33:23 -0400

27Djinn
There are many excellent writers contributing to ASC, but a few stand out for me. The first of them is Djinn, who constantly amazes with her breadth adn depth. Her Chapel stories are complex, nuanced and beautifully structured tales with riveting plots and memorable original characters. Then she eases over to Voyager and writes stories so rich in detail and characterization that my heart aches. This was a great year for her, and she deserves recognition as one of the very best.
-- Penny Proctor - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 19:52:26 -0400

38Jemima
There are many excellent writers contributing to ASC, but a few stand out for me. Jemima is an immensely talented writer and possibly the only one around who can tempt me to read a Seven story. When she's being serious, she writes stories that are thought-provoking and memorable; when she frees her sense of humor, she's LOL funny. And she is undeniably the champion filker of year. She's one of the very talented, and I hope her muse never deserts her - or us.
-- Penny Proctor - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 19:55:46 -0400

70Rocky
There are many excellent writers contributing to ASC, but a few stand out for me. Did anyone have a year as good as Rocky did? Her "Glory Days" stories are surely the best series of the year, combining picture-perfect characterization with plausible and poignant story lines. While those stories alone would merit recognition for this award, she also contributed to the other Trek universes as well as other Voyager stories - and contributions to the 7.5 project that go beyond her story credits. Rocky is surely deserving to be recognized as the best writer for this year.
-- Penny Proctor - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 19:59:33 -0400

27Djinn
Only a couple of other authors can say they contributed more stories to the NG this year: 28. And no other author has posted as stories of substantial length, about a dozen novellas and a novel. She's also one of the few who could boast of posting stories in each of the series. And they were all good, some of them among the best posted this year imo. I'm very fond of her Carter series, featuring Spock and Chapel heading the crew of a diplomatic/medical ship post-Generations. It features one of my favorite OFCs in fanfic, Randall Kerr, and this year took in a remarkable arc of very intense stories, one of which, "A Matter of Life and Death" moved me to tears. I'm a big fan also of her K/Cha series of stories. She completely makes me believe in those two as a couple even though before her stories I would have found that the most unlikely of pairings. IMHO, she writes a spot-on Kirk, always a winner with me;-) In fact, this first in the series "Like We Never Had a Broken Heart" is my favorite story posted to the NG this year. As a fan of Buffy, I get a kick out of her xover Slayer stories and found "Gotterdammerung" one of the most powerful tales on ASC this year. Her Mc/Cha "First, Do No Harm" was poignant and bitter, her Khan piece "Not All at Once" a chilling work of true horror, and "Dream Until Your Dream Comes True" a brilliant inversion of romantic fanfic notions of the Vulcan bond. Her story "Blood Debt" is a lovely fairy tale. She also wrote my favorite TNG story this year "Collateral Damage" a moving story of the aftermath of Nemesis. I loved her DS9 Novel featuring Vic, and her VOY stories especially her Seven story, "Alone" and the J/C "Morning Light" She made me cry. She made me laugh. She made me think. She is definitely one of the very best authors posting to ASC this or any year.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 21:57:54 -0400

38Jemima
Jemima works ranged from clever filks to imaginative short stories. I enjoyed all of them, "Efficiency Expert," was particularly fun, but the two that blew me away were "The Lamn'rau" and "What's Left of Her." Both were fascinating and chilling tales with interesting takes on the Borg.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 21:59:51 -0400

45Kelly Chambliss
Kelly's a lovely stylist with great insights into characters, particularly her fav Janeway, whose charisma she's great at showing. I loved "Chakotay and It," "Swing Time" was a delight, "Starlight" lyrical. Kelly's "Impress" and (with Boadicea) "Going Away" something special.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 22:00:51 -0400

58monkee
Monkee had standout stories in every series other than the Original. I found the VOY "The Man in 119" moving and affecting even on second read. "The Last Nacelle," is a poignant tale of Joe Carey that is all the more affecting given his canon fate. "Advice from Someone Who's Been There" was fun and witty with more than one laugh-out-loud moment. "Peacock Blue" was damn funny too. Her DS9 story "Anachronism" was one of my favorites posted in that series, moving and imaginative. I liked her tale of Lily and Cochrane "Friendship One" and enjoyed her ENT tales especially "Her Strut."
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 22:02:04 -0400

62Paula Stiles (thesnowleopard)
"You're Lucky I'm a Civilized Man" is outstanding with vivid characterizations of original and canon characters, especially her great OC, Sawalha. I also liked her drabbles on "payback" in each series. The TOS "The Captain's Woman" is delicious in its subversiveness and I can only hope for more.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 22:03:16 -0400

76Seema*
I don't usually bother voting where it can't count, but I found it impossible in the end to leave Seema out. She is definitely one of the Best Authors on the NG who produced one of the most extraordinary bodies of work this year. For me a "Best Author" should be more than prolific or even just consistently good or skillful. They should produce stories that are special, that make me feel I've learned something new about the canon characters without twisting them out of shape so they're unrecognizable. I want to be taken to the heights, feel that tingle or chill down my spine or laugh out loud or feel my eyes mist over. This is something Seema can do with very few other Trekfic authors. I think she does that because she is always pushing herself and experimenting. So we get the true mystery pairing in "An Inconvenient Attraction," one of the best ENT stories this year, the seemless, transparent use of the second person in "The Absinthe Heart" imo one the best and one of my favorites of the DS9 tales this year, stories that give us an unflinching look at the dark side of beloved characters like "Blink," along with one wonderful story in VOY after another. In "Baby Makes Five" she proved she could make laugh--and laugh, while "Act of War" kept me at the edge of my seat, and in "Rocketman" she had me crying like a fool. And that's just a sample. In her writing she doesn't play it safe. She's one of top authors in every series she's written a story in. Now THAT is impressive.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 22:05:34 -0400

88Ventura33
Her story combining TOS with Gone With the Wind is brilliant and hilarious. I found "Lessons Learned" moving, "Catfight in a Hot Vulcan Desert" terrific. Ventura, who does such a wonderful job with the Borg, is at her best in "Cybernetic Cadet" and "Imprinted." One of the best authors on the NG.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 30 Apr 2003 22:06:43 -0400

70Rocky
Rocky is an incredibly gifted writer who can write in any series. She is as comfortable with a drabble as she is a much longer story. Her J/C pieces have always been fine, but what she created with "Glory Days," with the able help of Seema, is truly outstanding. Although Voyager stories are perhaps her best-known works, she has written TOS, TNG, and DS9, too. Her descriptive passages are richly detailed; her dialogue and characterizations are both crisp and, above all, believable. She is as adept handling technobabble as she is constructing a storyline that holds together from start to finish, with subtle touches throughout that never fail to satisfy when the story is done. Rocky has been the best all-around writer in Trek fanfic today. This year, she's the one who has earned this award.
