This is the Digest from 2002 for the Category of: Janeway Pairing

2all this is window dressing by not jenny
Whoa, All This is Window Dressing is so cool! The format is perfectly bizarre (and bizarrely perfect) and is the only one that could keep this bitter narrative going. I loved the way it took us where we thought Janeway would end up and then jetted on out into the land of what I didn't expect. Amazing talent at work here. Not Jenny, don't let this be a one night stand! Write more Trek fic!

3DoubleKat by Ventura33
Oh my. This is an interesting situation and very steamy. And the ending sentiment is right on.
-- Djinn - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 21:48:20 -0500

4Forbidden Love by Seema
Too silly! And very cute as the reader tries to guess who the mystery lover is.

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
I find this story completely mesmerizing. Kelly Chambliss and Boadicea present us with an unlikely trio, certainly not the grouping to inspire the first thought of "ooooh, Sexy!" But these three unlikely lovers work, and work well. The multiple-drabble format is inspired, the writing seamless--a perfect collaboration. Reading it was an otherworldly experience. Like I was in a drug-induced fantasy that was a bit hazy but still rich in texture. Very lush, with an air of underlying sadness and desperation and resignation and detachment. I'm way impressed! And very jealous! I look forward to the next improbable story this duo comes up with!

6Reflections in a mirror by vanhunks
Oh my god this is dark. And strangely compelling. Well written, almost in a Victorian sensibility. This is a Janeway and Paris we don't often see, and that might be a good thing. Nicely done.
-- Djinn - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 21:49:39 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
Darkly beautiful, the late night ponderings are slightly chilling.

8Swing Time by Kelly
Some stories you read and enjoy and move on, and others you get to the end and you realize that you have a humongous smile on your face because the story was just that much fun. Swing Time is one of those stories and Kelly Chambliss had me humming along with the big band music and the lively dancing that I could see in my head as well as if it were on my screen. This is a wonderful story that evokes the best of Tom Paris, and shows how endearing and appealing he can be in his obsessions. And this features a wonderfully in character Kathryn Janeway, that still manages to fall under the spell. I can't wait for them to "Beguine" again.
-- Djinn - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 21:50:26 -0500

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
Ooh, I like this. I really, really like this. It's got a darkness that I find wonderful for the light touch that accompanies it, and a humor that is too dark to be just for laughs. And running through it all there is a hearty sense of longing. All told in a somewhat to very inebriated fashion that is truly enjoyable and believable. Well done!
-- Djinn - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 21:50:54 -0500

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
An unusual group put together unusually well. Angsty, raw, and lingering.

I'm a sucker for second-person POV. The cruelty to Chakotay and the ring were touches that struck me in particular; overall this was a good stylistic piece.
-- Jemima - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:46:35 -0500

4Forbidden Love by Seema
This was *not* my fault, though the line "Plant? What plant?" does ring a bell. Forbidden Love is a fine addition to the neglected genres of JetPP, ready-room trysts and Busted! The evidence in Janeway's hair is a perfect touch.
-- Jemima - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:47:10 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
I'm voting for Kashyk's final line as best Kashyk Line Ever.
-- Jemima - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:47:40 -0500

8Swing Time by Kelly
Janeway was light and fluffy as promised, but Tom was in rare form in this story. The scheming, lying, biting off more than he can chew EveryTom with a heart of gold is my favorite helmsman incarnation, and he shines here in his zoot suit.
-- Jemima - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:48:19 -0500

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
I'm not sure what that was but I enjoyed it, especially the plings and the red.
-- Jemima - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:48:43 -0500

4Forbidden Love by Seema
LOL! Not your usual Janeway pairing, by a long shot, but Seema carries it off with aplomb.
-- Rocky - Wed, 26 Mar 2003 04:01:48 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
Kelly is one of my favorite authors for Janeway/Kashyk and this story is a prime example why. As always, I'm captivated by Kelly's powerful and evocative imagery, and how she conveys so much in just a few words.
-- Rocky - Wed, 26 Mar 2003 04:02:26 -0500

8Swing Time by Kelly
Stories like this make me appreciate the allure of J/P. Kelly is such a masterful storyteller I can actually hear the music, feel the thumping of the feet on the dance floor, and the rush of adrenaline and hormones hanging in the air. This is one powerful and sexy story.

An excellent story, one of the best of the year. Characterization, style, pacing. . .not jenny excels at them all. Pulling off a story in second person *and* future tense isn't easy, but not jenny makes it seem so.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 17:24:43 -0500

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
I wish Teanna would write more J/7; I really like this story, with its effective present tense and stylistic depiction of drunkenness.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 17:29:24 -0500

4Forbidden Love by Seema
This was just a hysterically funny piece. The writing was extremely well done to make the final lines a perfect punchline to the whole story. The image it paints of Janeway with a green... well, thumb definitely isn't the part of the anatomy in question here. A truly delightful romantic adventure. Whoa Nellie doesn't know what you were smoking or drinking when you came up with this, but send some our way, please.

I thought this story was an effective use of the second person, and for that matter the future tense. The second person lends an ironic distance and lyricism to this story of Janeway's and her liaisons with Chakotay and Seven after Voyager's return. The future tense left me feeling a dreamlike sense and wondering if it was all *really* happening. I liked how Picard and even Quark made their appearance in the tale. "all this is window dressing" is a stylish tale with interesting interpretations of what is turning out to be a ubiquitous triangle in fan fiction given what we were given in Endgame, Janeway, Chakotay, and Seven.

3DoubleKat by Ventura33
If a parent is infuriating because they know you even better than you know yourself...Well, what do you do with a--literally--older, wiser self? This tale of the two Endgame Kates was very funny and very well written. I always remember when I think of this story? Three words: Betazoid passion berry.

4Forbidden Love by Seema
LOL. I liked how Seema played with the reader before revealing all.

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
A collection of drabbles the authors note says, written by turns, over four years. And featuring as it's romantic--threesome Janeway, Seven, and er…Neelix. Each section, each drabble shifting the point of view. You might think there is no way that could work. But then this is a story by Boadicea and Kelly--so you read on--and it works beyond your expectations. The writing is crisp, spare, and lyrical and sensuous despite that. I think it may be the choice of detail, which is unerring in creating atmosphere and creating a vivid picture. (The way they write about something as prosaic as buttons becomes poetic and sensual under their hands). I'm struck with how tactile their descriptions are. Boadicea and Kelly deftly describe the dynamic between the three. And within the story there are wonderful glimpses and insights into all their characters that make you go ah. "Going Away" is a memorable story I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

6Reflections in a mirror by vanhunks
I liked this short story, "Reflections in a Mirror" very much. Van Hunks writing features tight, rather lush, prose with evocative descriptions. The encounter between Janeway and Paris was well done I thought. Moreover, this particular story has a very strong ending I did not for a moment expect. Very enjoyable.
-- Rabble Rouser - Fri, 28 Mar 2003 14:17:45 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
"Starlight" impresses with its lyricism and the interesting juxtaposition of Kashyk's and Janeway's POVs as well as the dichotomy between starlight evening thought and those come morning. This is short, economical, powerful and bitter writing that stays with you.

8Swing Time by Kelly
The summary describes the story as "fluff" and "pure marshmallow crème." Maybe so, but it is very enjoyable, delicious delectable creme and you should certainly grab a spoon and enjoy. Sweet maybe, but not ever saccharine. Janeway's interactions with Paris were fun and her conversations with Neelix hilarious: "This level of formality from him usually meant that he was about to ask something he expected her to say no to. Something she *ought* to say no to. Something she *would* say no to if she listened to her better judgment." Bwwaaaahhhhaaaaaaaaaaa!!! She should have listened to that inner voice There was a *wide* smile on my face I tell you as I read of Paris' reaction to a certain "offending neckline." Loved Chakotay's parting shot--and the ending. "Swing Time" is a truly fun story that will leave you with a smile on your face. One of the most enjoyable stories I read this awards year. Delightful.

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
This story does the old UST well (for the uninitiated that stands for "unresolved sexual tension"--or so I understand). I like Janeway's hyperawareness of how close Seven's arm is to the centimeter. And I especially love Teanna's inebriated Seven. "Tom Collins Never..." is an effectively written story.

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
A lovely moment of vintage Janeway: razor-sharp insights and a loneliness that she can't quite assuage. All the best parts of the fraught relationship between Janeway and Seven somehow summed up in a quiet night in an empty bar.

Not Jenny has the uncanny ability to write seamless second person prose. It's barely noticeable. And when used well it's a most powerful device, conveying a deeper mood - an accusatory tone. This is a wonderfully effective story - interspersed throughout are echoes of Janeway's Captaincy, commands and voices that almost delineate madness. It's strange and eerie at the same time. These are not pretty characters, these are full, complex characters with issues they can't get over, events that have changed them forever. It's an amazing read. The last line is a killer. The only shortfall is that Not Jenny did not write more.
-- Christinecgb - Fri, 28 Mar 2003 22:18:26 -0500

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
I think this was a story written in response to the general feeling that it just couldn't be done. Boadicea and Kelly took Neelix and decided to make him empathetic and believable in this situation and I'm freaking impressed that they succeeded. I like the drabble format too - it was strangely effective in that it stopped and started the story, like it had to be retold several times. It also gives the opportunity to change points of view and that's also an effective tool. The last drabble is the one that really brings it home (or lets it leave rather). This is a Janeway I've become familiar with - the one that just can't stay.

I'm a sucker for second person POV stories and this is a beauty of an example. Plus it's oh so angsty and so very painful look at what the future holds for Kathryn Janeway.

Ventura33 has a way to make nearly any premise work and this story is a perfect example of it. She juggles the two Janeways very skillfully.

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
This is one of those fics you have to read to believe. It's amazing. of course, one wouldn't expect anything less from the team of Boadicea and Kelly, but this threesome between Neelix, Seven and Janeway - written in drabble form - is absolutely amazing. It's seductive, sultry, poignant, and the attention to detail and description - even in such a concise form of storytelling - is incredible. And more importantly, they did what some would think the impossible - make Neelix sexy. Wonderful job!
-- Seema - Sat, 29 Mar 2003 21:39:51 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
I love the way Kelly manages to get under the skin of Kashyk and Janeway both and here she does a spectacular job of it. I can see both Janeway and Kashyk thinking the things they do here.
-- Seema - Sat, 29 Mar 2003 21:41:21 -0500

8Swing Time by Kelly
This fic is filled with so many wonderful moments. Tom in a zoot suit, the ever-enthusiastic Neelix, the suggestion that Janeway and Chakotay perform the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet (and btw, I would *really* love to see that fic, Kelly), the somersault flips. Kathryn's reactions to all of this are spot-on and Tom is very well done as well. A really fun and terrific fic all around.

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
The thinly sketched out setting is perfect for an intoxicated Janeway and Seven. Their interplay is priceless - showing just enough of Janeway's feelings for her protege. Lovely work and would love to see more.

8Swing Time by Kelly
I remember being entirely impressed by this story when I first read it, and being doubly impressed by it when I read it again recently. It had the most beautiful subtlety. There is a scene at the end which is crafted so well that you completely feel the tension between the two characters. It's done so simply and yet SO effectively. As a writer I am terribly envious. As a read, well, it's one of my favourite Voyager fics ever. A real classic and I don't think people should leave Voyager fic without reading it.

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
Such a clever little piece that will have you plinging and plonging all over the place. The thought of Seven saying "Pling Plong" is just too cute. And the rather lovely Janeway voice as she earnestly asks Seven to tell her more about the taste of "red" is beautifully done. It's the kind of fic that create these wonderful visuals - a little eccentric in execution but such a joy to read.

Oh! The prehensile plant! What a character! And tee hee hee - Seema has Janeway offering it coffee! There's a visual I won't be able to forget in an hurry. Thanks for that one Seema - I had a good chuckle.

5Going Away by Boadicea and Kelly
This is about the most unlikely threesome anyone could have pictured, but the authors' wonderful use of language and imagery somehow makes it work. The drabble style really brings out the details, and even little things like buttons become wonderfully sensual. Love it!
-- Ventura33 - Fri, 04 Apr 2003 19:42:28 -0500

7Starlight by Kelly
Great contrast in perspectives here, as we get a glimpse of some uncensored thoughts. Kashyk is not one of my favorite characters, but I must say, I like this Janeway who doesn't have any problem with admitting to herself that she just wants him for his body.
-- Ventura33 - Fri, 04 Apr 2003 19:46:33 -0500

9tom collins never had one in this bar by Teanna
A wonderfully bizarre, not to mention inebriated, stream of consciousness narrative. The shift back and forth to second-person POV works perfectly with Janeway's disjointed thoughts and helps to bring out the feelings she would never dare to express. I love the blending of tastes, colors, and sounds into some sort of alcohol-induced synesthesia. And of course we know that Janeway will be back to her normal, repressed self in the morning, a small tragedy that she may not even be able to recognize when she's sober. An excellent story.

There were a number of not-so-happy post-Endgame stories about Janeway this year. This was one of the better ones, wherein Janeway gets everything she wants, and in the end, nothing that she needs.
