A sad but nice look into a tragic event. ( i would vote the whole series as a winner)
-- Michele - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 11:29:50 -0500
4The Final Candle by Annie M
A nice look into a character we never knew. The story makes you want to know more.
-- Michele - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 11:30:41 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
Ah, Glory Days set awry. Another heart-rending installment. Paris' emotions are captured perfectly, and having Neelix included was a very memorable touch.
-- Ananke - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 14:35:29 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
A poignant story of friendship and loss, deftly written, faithful to the characters. Loved the title.
-- Kathie - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:03:45 -0500
4The Final Candle by Annie M
A beautiful story which provides some much needed closure for this character and her feelings toward her daughter. The descriptions do a wonderful job of setting the tone, and I could really hear Miral Torres's voice.
-- Rocky - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 09:29:13 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
This story is a must read for anyone who mourns the loss of Joe Carey in canon. A lovely look at completeness and coming full circle at the end of the journey of a lifetime.
-- Rocky - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 09:29:59 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
A horrifying, yet realistic, look at assimilation and its after-effects. And a reminder that sometimes there truly is a point of no return.
-- Rocky - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 09:30:52 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
As her award-winning stories in "Strange New Worlds" suggest, monkee writes a superb Joe Carey. This gentle story is another winner.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:01:30 -0500
4The Final Candle by Annie M
An interesting exploration of the character of B'Elanna's mother, with a very effective ending. I quite enjoyed it.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:06:06 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
A poignant, bittersweet elegy for Harry from Tom. Seema made the inspired choice of having Tom narrate his feelings to Neelix, which makes such sense.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:12:08 -0500
9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
A very interesting coda to "Blink of an Eye." Dr. J has the EMH's voice down perfectly.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:14:56 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
Jemima has created a chilling and fully-believable alternate ending to "Unimatrix Zero." The last line is really effective, as are the various references to the Doc's subroutines. I like the way Jemima merges seriouness with the EMH's often unwitting humor. Some fine lines: "I tamp down my righteous indignation subroutines" and "A subroutine of mine is in love with [Seven]"
-- Kelly Chambliss - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:25:49 -0500
6Novus Veritas by SaRa
This story shows amazing insight into the human tendency to sugarcoat memories, especially memories of home when you're far away. The contrast of reality with the warm, rose-colored glasses memory was very well done.
-- Whoa Nellie - Thu, 27 Mar 2003 18:53:44 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
A neat look at one of Voyager's minor characters. Nice to see him alive and well. Monkee obviously has a soft spot in her heart for Joe Carey; she gives us a brief interlude in VVS7.5 to give him a chance to finish what he started.
-- Lori - Fri, 28 Mar 2003 22:57:04 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
Seema captures the trauma of the aftermath of horrible circumstances -- the loss of a friend, the near-fatal injury of a spouse, the necessity of informing friends -- without undue melodrama and hand-wringing, keeping Tom Paris real and taking care of business the best he can. A sad but well-done entry in the Glory Days series, and a perfect example of Seema's fic. She makes it look so easy.
-- Lori - Sat, 29 Mar 2003 00:21:29 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
Perhaps a more realistic ending for Unimatrix Zero, if the Borg were all they were made out to be, if TPTB had cared about consistency. But they don't, and we're lucky for all that - we get Jemima writing about what she writes best. The Borg, in all their cold efficiency.
-- Lori - Sat, 29 Mar 2003 01:19:48 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
This was an incredibly hard story for Seema to write, to strike the balance between mourning and descending into the maudlin, and she pulls it off so well. Tom says a farewell to his closest friend, while at the same time confiding in another friend just what he was going through, what he is still going through. I can hear Tom's voice so clearly, see his every facial expression. This is another story that moves me every time I reread it.
-- Rocky - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 08:29:17 -0500
9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
A lovely follow-up to "Blink of an Eye" by one of the best EMH writers in the fandom. The Doctor's existence down on the planet really comes to life--and I'm glad he had the chance to know about the road he hadn't taken.
-- Rocky - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 08:35:45 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
Seema gives us yet another winner with one of the most touching stories of this wonderful Glory Days series. I really feel for Tom Paris here, and Seema writes him just wonderfully, showing us his helplessness as he sits vigil and his touching tribute to a lost comrade on the holodeck. It is all very real, very powerful. I loved the bit at the end with the welcome view of an old friend.
-- Djinn - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 20:31:38 -0500
10Transitions by RoseKira
I always liked this version of Tom's life, and this is a logical (and extraordinarily wrenching) extension of what that life would have meant in practical terms. I loved Harry's voice in this, the perfect cattle prod.
-- Djinn - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 20:32:02 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
I'm a sucker for the EMH and for the Borg and for darkness and angst. So this story pretty much has it all for me. Jemima gets so deeply into the Doctor's head (holohead?), giving us amazing insight into how he operates, how his subroutines combine to project the construct that he is. In the process, she shows us some interesting similarities with other folks on board and with the Borg. This is dark and sad, but alive with texture and characterization. Very well done!
-- Djinn - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 20:32:27 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
I really liked this story. Joe Carey in the spotlight finally! I liked how the building of the bottle made a perfect analogy for all that Voyager - and Joe - had endured in the DQ. This is well-written and very touching.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:32:43 -0500
3B'Elanna and I by Deede
I liked this story from Admiral Paris' perspective, which is a rare one at that. The observations made here are very good and on target.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:36:02 -0500
4The Final Candle by Annie M
What a beautiful story! Finally, here is Miral's side of the story and I love the picture Annie paints here, of a mother who desperately loves her child but didn't know how to reconcile those feelings with her culture. Lovely story. I hope to see more stories from Annie this year.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:38:36 -0500
5Meld Prelude by Darrel W. Beach
A nice backstory for Frank Darwin, made especially poignant about his thoughts about becoming better friends with Paris.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:42:41 -0500
6Novus Veritas by SaRa
An interesting Janeway perspective.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:43:30 -0500
8Sanctuary a prologue to Altruistic Motives by jamelia
It was really nice to see Kes again, especially since this story treats her with respect and dignity - what she deserved all along. This story is a real treat for anyone who appreciated who Kes really was rather than the bitter character TPTB turned her into.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:46:34 -0500
9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
I liked this coda to "Blink of an Eye." Good job.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:49:47 -0500
10Transitions by RoseKira
What a sad and angsty Tom POV. RoseKira really does this kind of fic well and as usual, she has numerous one-liners that are true zingers.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:52:19 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
No one writes the Borg like Jemima and very few authors can match Jemima's style in setting mood and tension in just a few lines. That style and low is evident in this fic which is a gripping and wonderful follow-up to Unimatrix Zero. This is the not-so-happy ending for that episode and it's so well-done. Jemima manages to really show how the crew feels about the 'loss' of three of their own without being heavy-handed or melodramatic. Characterizations are very well down throughout. Nice job.
-- Seema - Sun, 30 Mar 2003 22:01:06 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
A story poignant with a wealth of emotion and irony given Carey's canonical fate. I liked how Carey found closure in finishing the model of Voyager for his boys, and how the sight of the model ship in the bottle brought his emotions to surface. A fine vignette and character sketch.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:41:32 -0500
3B'Elanna and I by Deede
I liked how Paris and his father interacted and the peace offerings at the end.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:42:05 -0500
4The Final Candle by Annie M
I thought this first-person narrative told by B'Elanna's mother was very well-done. The author conjures Miral up vividly, her thoughts, feelings, and even the physical weariness she feels. She also is good at evoking John Torres, or at least the John Torres that Miral sees. She makes us see what the initial attraction must have been for this mismatched couple. And finally, she makes you feel for what the young B'Elanna must have gone through as the daughter of these parents, and Miral's uneasy relationship with her. And Miral's regrets and pride. I liked how it ended with her prayer and overhearing the prayer of others. "The Final Candles" is a moving and evocative story.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:42:54 -0500
5Meld Prelude by Darrel W. Beach
I found it interesting to see Tom Paris (and Lon Suder) through the eyes of someone other than one of the regular characters, Frank Darwin. I liked how Beach detailed the contrasts not only between the two men Darwin was observing but the differences and similarities between himself and Paris. This prelude certainly stops in a shocking place.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:43:32 -0500
6Novus Veritas by SaRa
Interesting story of memory being blurred by imagination.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:44:00 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
"Rocketman" is an incredible story on so many levels. "Rocketman" is a particularly moving entry in the Glory Days series. It features such fine writing and is a wonderful tribute to the relationship between Harry Kim and Tom Paris. You know, often in a story the best compliment I can pay is that it dragged me down and would not let go till the end. With this story, I actually couldn't face reading it that way, at one point I found it too overwhelming and I needed to take a break from the intensity of it. I finished it with a hard lump in my throat blinking back tears. That's rare that any story can move me that way, particularly one focused on stories outside Classic Trek where I feel less emotionally invested in the characters. I also loved how this was being told to Neelix, bringing in and connecting with that character made Tom’s account even more moving to me. This was one of the most powerful Trek stories I read this year.

8Sanctuary a prologue to Altruistic Motives by jamelia
It was wonderful to see Kes again in a story. It very satisfyingly ties up some loose ends. The beginning starts out vividly from the first line, the first paragraph, with a wealth of sensory detail. I loved how Jamelia described Kes's appearance. I found the details about the conditions and changes among the Ocampans since the Caretaker died very interesting. I loved the way the author weaved canon references like Linnis and the salamander babies into the story with a deft touch. I liked the connection to and glimpse of Tuvok as well. Jamelia's "Sanctuary" is a very enjoyable story.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:49:56 -0500
9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
Nice story of one EMH to another.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:50:28 -0500
10Transitions by RoseKira
Wrenching story of a very different homecoming to the alpha quadrant for Tom Paris in the alternate universe of "Before and After."
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:54:13 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
There is a very nice set up at the start with quotations from the original episode. "What's Left of Her" is a very interesting alternate universe tale based on "Unimatrix Zero." Jemima Pereira is very good at capturing the Doctor's voice and personality. I like the idea that his periods of deactivation are akin to sleep. Seven is very well written too, as is Paris and Chakotay in the glimpses we get of them. I found the nature of the Borg Queen articulated by Tuvok in the story fascinating as well as the others speculation about the nature of the collective. In particular there is one stunning revelation about the nature of Borg drone memory and identity that gives the reader plenty to thing about. I'm amazed at the imagination demonstrated in this tightly written story. The ending, particularly that last line, is a heartbreaker. "What's Left of Her" is an excellent story. I very much enjoyed it and remember it vividly several weeks after having read it.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 04:56:06 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
This is another insightful look at the struggles of simply coping with life. Seema really understands Tom Paris. And I was glad to see the nod to Tom's friendship with Neelix.
-- Penny Proctor - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 18:58:15 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
This fic was the perfect follow-up to the action that preceeded it in the series. Seema managed to keep this one from being overly introspective or melodramatic, which it so easily could have become. The Neelix moment at the end was also done perfectly.
-- Sara - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 00:00:46 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
A chilling story, and one that Jemima did a wonderful job on. The Doctor's observations of the crew are fascinating. I really appreciated this look at a twisted reality.
-- Sara - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 00:15:03 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
A fascinating look on the Borg, one that isn't entirely implausible. Actually, you make more sense the show does. :) Very sad and tragic, but as always your writing is excellent.
-- Elise - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 10:42:41 -0500
6Novus Veritas by SaRa
This was short, but rang so true. I can just imagine how those many years away would distort reality, not only for Janeway, but the rest of the crew as well. An economy of words, but a wealth of emotion.
-- Cait N. - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 20:06:07 -0500
2The Last Nacelle by Monkee
I hated when Carey was killed off on the series, and I'm glad to see the VVS7.5 project changed that! I wished they'd done more with him, something along the lines of Monkee's story. It would have worked so well within any of the storylines. Though it was sad at the end, knowing how he ended up in "cannon."
-- Cait N. - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 20:07:59 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
A wonderful fiction and great ulogy to those that have departed. Even if there were no funeral, the message Tom recorded brought a sort of closure. For me, it was the perfect story -- cried myself silly.
-- Winnie - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 22:49:24 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
Tom's monologue to Neelix worked well, regardless of his own (Seema's own?) self-deprecating remarks about it. Tom tries to explain away what happened to Harry in Sickbay, but it still sounds like negligence to me. It's not like triage and war are *new* for AQ Starfleets - they could take two seconds to run a tricorder over someone with a head wound.
-- Jemima - Thu, 03 Apr 2003 23:56:22 -0500
7Rocketman by Seema
This is such a powerful and sad story as Tom Paris finds himself having to be the bearer of bad news. His search for the right words is painfully realistic.
-- Ventura33 - Fri, 04 Apr 2003 18:19:50 -0500
11What's Left of Her by Jemima
Another great story from Jemima! This alternate ending to Unimatrix Zero, while thoroughly grim, is more realistic than what the writers actually gave us. The Doctor's detached POV works very well here.
-- Ventura33 - Fri, 04 Apr 2003 18:22:47 -0500
9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
Aww, that was sweeeet... :) It's a nice take on events in the episode, and it'll stay with me all day. Go you!

7Rocketman by Seema
Whew! This is one of the most intense episodes in the "Glory Days" series. Tom has always been my favorite Voyager character (although I love all of them), and this poignant story captures him perfectly. Seema does a lovely job with the shifting emotions he goes through as he worries about his wife, mourns a close friend, and takes on the difficult task of informing a good friend far away of a depth. Nice to see that little scene with the "good friend far away" at the end, too. In this series, none of the Voyager characters have been ignored. I love that.

9Star Bright by Dr. Jekyl
I enjoyed the Voyager episode "Blink of an Eye," and this story by Dr. Jekyl is a lovely follow-up, a "what might have been" for the Doctor, that I enjoyed tremendously.

4The Final Candle by Annie M
Annie has always had a terrific way with P/T. This story about Miral--B'Elanna's mother, not her daughter--is lovely, and makes me annoyed, all over again, that the producers decided to kill her off so that B'Elanna would never have the chance to reconcile with her in life. At least we have her in fanfic, and Annie does a wonderful job with her here.
