This is the Digest from 2002 for the Category of:
Wolf and Otter Award for Best New Author
5Catherine Ellis
When I first started reading fanfic about Picard and Crusher last year I was disappointed by some of the stories I read because they appeared to have little or no plot. Then I read some stories by Catherine and enjoyed them all. They have convincing plots and are well written. They often have a mystery in them which keeps you guessing to the end.The characters of Picard and Crusher are believable and fit with the images I have of them in my head. The Gift remains one of my favourite short stories of this genre.
-- Rose Evans - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 02:17:51 -0400
26Kylie Lee
I love Kylie's stories, especially Heat. She a great talent for weaving her stories around canon and showing these great, angsty moments that float through my head months after I've read the stories.
-- Taryn Eve - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:37:15 -0400
25Kipli
I love Kipli's stories Togetherness and Disconnected. Kipli can push the three characters apart and together in a way that makes me remember their vulnerability *and* their joy.
-- Taryn Eve - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:39:56 -0400
30Mara Greengrass
Mara has entertained me a lot over the last year. Amnesia is one of my all time favorite stories in the ENT fandom and always will be! I also enjoyed the pain and torture of the Trip's Socks story--I know how much effort it took to work on it, and I'm glad she stuck to her guns and finished the story. I'm gushing, but Mara's given me her best as a writer, beta reader, and as Ms. Grammatica, and I'm glad she's around. :)
-- Taryn Eve - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:44:43 -0400
35nostalgia
nostalgia says a lot with very few words. She's inspired some of the best moments in the ENT fandom and it's been a privilege to disagree with her. ;) I really liked Ensign and I hope she continues to explore the Trek universe. ::salute::

27Kyra Cullinan
Kyra Cullinan gave us two lovely stories to enjoy, both of which would be a great debut, but together they are simply stunning. Fly Away showed us a Vic Fontaine that became so real, with prose that was lovely and lyrical. And The Speed of Sound gave us a lovely look at Picard and Crusher. Keep writing Kyra! Keep writing.
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:56:20 -0400
20Kat
I am so impressed with this author's debut story, Tourniquet. I cannot say enough good things about it or about the sure skill that is in evidence in the writing. There is a lovely sense of pacing, never hurried, and the characters of the two main figures are well done. This author has a bright future ahead; I hope to read more by hir.
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:56:58 -0400
21Kath (Trekkigrrl)
Kath hit the scene with the laugh-out-loud Original Series romp, Blast from the Past. Showing a wonderful, sassy style, Kath brought Chapel and her befuddled Vulcan boytoy to vivid life. Loved the witty repartee, and the twist at the end. Can't wait to see what Kath does with these folks next
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:57:27 -0400
36not jenny
Not Jenny burst on the scene in 2002 with the amazingly lush and experimental All This is Window Dressing. Her use of the future tense, along with the inserted thought snippets--so bitter those, and they add so much--is inspired. This is a story to remember. I look forward to more from this amazing author.
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:57:55 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara Goose is another new author that just exploded on the scene in 2002. Ze gave us wonderfully impressive stories in Deep Space Nine, Next Generation, and in MIS. My favorite story of hir hands down is Another Glance, which I think so gets into the head of Miles O'Brien and his complicated feelings for Kira. Loved it! But Sara showed hirself equally capable at handling a Trill's emotions as well, and a Betazoid's, and a human...well you get the idea. This is a great new author and I look forward to more from hir in the coming year.
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:58:15 -0400
49T'Guess
Loved Checkmate, thought it was a very fun romp through TOS-land. Can't wait to see what's next from this talented author.
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:58:36 -0400
48Teanna
Wonderful first story to ASC in Tom Collins Never Had One in This Bar. Amazing style, I really started to feel as if I was the one that was inebriated. Lovely writing at work here. Can't wait to see what Teanna does next!
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:58:59 -0400
35nostalgia
I could go on all night about this new author and hir amazing talent for turning out startling fic after startling fic. Nostalgia has one of the surest hands I've seen when it comes to turning what you think you see on the screen into something else entirely. Usually something darker and twisted and yet in the end still totally believable. Her writing is lyrically smooth but somehow still manages to be cutting and jagged, the contrast often serving to set the story firmly in whatever world ze wants it to be in. There is a never a point where this author loses control of hir prose, even if the characters do demand some odd things from hir. I particularly love the way ze redeems Hoshi by making her all dark and complex. And the way ze mocks Archer, great fun!! And the wonderful thing is that Nostalgia can do it in any series with any charcters, from Bashir to Seven, from Hoshi to T'Pol. Wonderful work, Nostalgia! Can't wait to read what comes next!
-- Djinn - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 19:59:22 -0400
37Quills
Gateway is one of the best Enterprise stories ever! I was hooked after reading the first chapter. Quills is an excellent writer. Her/she knows how to keep the readers attention. Quills really deserves this award!
-- Rita Galford - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 14:40:31 -0400
30Mara Greengrass
I really like Mara's work. She's got a great sense of humor.
-- Taryn Eve - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 16:56:09 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara, in the last year, has really impressed me with her short stories. It's hard to say which of her stories I like best - she writes characters faithfully. May she write longer and more involved stories soon!
-- Lori - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:07:10 -0400
35nostalgia
If I had to choose one word to describe nostalgia's writing it would be 'haunting.' She writes highly evocative as well as provocative prose.
-- Rocky - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:18:30 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara has impressed me tremendously this year with her wonderful stories in DS9 and TNG. She really knows how to get to the heart of her characters and reveal them to us in just a few well chosen phrases. Worf, Troi, O'Brien, Ezri--they all come alive for us. Sara is also particularly good at filling in gaps in canon, giving us glimpses of the characters and events that were implied but never spelled out. I look forward to what Sara will give us next year.
-- Rocky - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:20:03 -0400
27Kyra Cullinan
Kyra is damn good. She can take simple ideas and make them wonderous. She has such a way with the language as well. Looking forward to more from her next year.

41Sara Goose
A really, *really* great author. She makes me wanna lock her in a room and make her write fanfic for my own entertainment. (And if that wasn't the scariest comment this year, I dunno what was.) But, yeah, breathtakingly good.
-- nostalgia - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 23:32:47 -0400
53Tori Morris
Gah... *melts into a puddle on the floor* Amazing. Wow. Great. All those words. Just...gah...

35nostalgia
I have to credit my re-sparked interest in Trek fic to Nostalgia. I was ecstatic to find these great vignettes that explored these characters in the way that made me appreciate Trek fic in the first place. I had forgotten about what a complex character Janeway could be in fanfic and Nostalgia reminded me. She likes to twist and turn fic and to write the story that was never written - the one where the characters do something completely unexpected. I swear, if there's a Trek revival going on amongst multi-fandom authors it's got to be Nostalgia's fault. And if I'm back here next year, that will be her fault too. Definitely my favourite new author this year.
-- Christinecgb - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:46:19 -0400
41Sara Goose
I feel quite remiss in not having discovered Sara Goose before voting started. Having just read her stories over the voting period I'm thinking I nearly missed out on a great new addition to the Trek fic archive. She's another author attempting to answer questions raised by canon and I was really pleased to read some of her DS9 to this effect. I'll be sure to pick out more of her stuff in the future.
-- Christinecgb - Tue, 22 Apr 2003 10:49:07 -0400
35nostalgia
nostalgia really impressed me this year with her grasp on subtle characteristics and her unique approach to storytelling. "People Like You" is a great example of this, and also really makes me want to see more on the Section31 front from nostalgia.
-- Sara - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 03:43:56 -0400
53Tori Morris
Tori does DS9 so well and manages to put a great spin on whatever she tackles. "Home Again," for example, takes a story that I really would like to see (that of Sisko's homecoming) and throws a tragic and very believable wrench in it. "Trinity" is probably my favourite piece by Tori because it takes a relationship we never see and gives it a treatment it really deserves. Thank you, Tori, for such a lovely year and I look forward to whatever else you might have coming.
-- Sara - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 03:52:48 -0400
5Catherine Ellis
It's always good to see a new author in TNG and Catherine writes interesting P/C.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:04:57 -0400
20Kat
Kat had a lyrical flow to her writing and her work on "Tourniquet" was very polished, especially from a 'first time' ficcer. I hope to see more from this author in the future.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:05:42 -0400
27Kyra Cullinan
Kyra's Vic Fountaine fic, "Fly Away," was one of my favorite DS9 fics posted this year. The writing was beautiful, the insight into Vic wonderful, and I loved her deft handling of the character. I'd love to see more from Kyra in the future.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:07:07 -0400
30Mara Greengrass
Thanks to the Awards, I got the chance to enjoy Mara's ENT fic. I enjoyed Mara's take on Hoshi and thought she did a great job with "The Ritual." Good work and hope to see more.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:08:08 -0400
17Josephine
I found Josephine's ENT stories, particularly "Head of Jupiter Station," interesting.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:09:07 -0400
35nostalgia
nostalgia is a lovely, intriguing and beautiful new voice in Trek. Her stories - whether DS9 or ENT or VOY - illuminate characters in a way I never quite saw before. That's the power of wonderful storytelling. My favorite story by nostalgia this year is most definitely, "Vox Iuvenium." I hope nostalgia sticks around ASC in the future.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:10:45 -0400
36not jenny
not jenny's fic, "All This is Window Dressing," was riveting and fascinating. I love her storytelling ability and the smooth flow to her writing. I would love to read more Trekfic by not jenny.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:11:28 -0400
24Ke Roth
Ke Roth's highly ambitious TNG fic, "Echoes," has good characterization and intricate plotting. I hope to see more TNG from Ke Roth in the future.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:12:36 -0400
40Sandi G
I noticed Sandi G has been posting to ASC for a while and this is the first year she has posted a fic. I hope she continues to post her interesting P/C fic to the newsgroup.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:13:33 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara Goose has been absolutely amazing this year and it's a fair statement to say that her fics are among those on my 'must save' list. Sara manages to combine pure style with substance and I'm blown away by the way she manages to provide the reader with the details that really matter and somehow leave out those that might be considered extraneous. While I love all of Sara's fics, if pressed to name them, my favorite stories by Sara this year are the highly original "Golden Gateways" and the angsty, provocative "Another Glance." "Another Glance," especially, is notable because it takes on a pairing that hasn't been explored much in the past and in Sara's hands, the themes and characters of the story were handled so deftly. It's always a thrill to read a new story from Sara Goose and I really hope she continues to post her wonderful fic to ASC and continue to go where few have gone before her. Bravo on a great year, Sara!
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:17:49 -0400
48Teanna
Teanna is another person who I wish would write much more Trekfic. I loved "tom collins never had one in this bar" for its atmosphere and gorgeous writing.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:19:07 -0400
47Taryn Eve
Taryn Eve is a wonderful new ENT writer. I especially enjoyed "The First Stone."
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:20:24 -0400
53Tori Morris
Tori is an amazing writing. She has a gift to manipulate words, to phrase things so succinctly yet get the most meaning out of them. All of her stories posted this year were a treat and I was especially glad to see a new DS9 writer on the newsgroup this year. "Home Again" is my favorite story by Tori, but I enjoyed "Trinity" as well. She is a unique storyteller so here's to hoping for another great year from Tori.
-- Seema - Thu, 24 Apr 2003 18:22:18 -0400
20Kat
Kat may be a newcomer to ASC, but the strengths and polish of her story "Tourniquet" suggest to me that she's no novice writer. This Janeway/Crusher tale is nothing short of excellent. I wouldn't mind if Kat felt like writing some more Janeway stories. . .
-- Kelly Chambliss - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 13:35:55 -0400
35nostalgia
nostalgia's work is a delight. Not only do I enjoy her VOY stories, but her whole website is fun, showing the same wry perception that I like in her stories. Take her summary for the excellent Seven story, "Stockholm Syndrome": "Seven of Nine deals with cultural relativism." Perfect understatement that says so much by saying so little. I look forward to reading more "nostalgia" stories. Just one small suggestion, though, that I hope won't seem too critical: don't forget the spell check.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 15:30:35 -0400
36not jenny
I wish I were a Star Fleet captain and not jenny were an ensign -- because then I could *order* her to write more stories! "All This is Window-Dressing" is one of my keepers; if only not jenny would post more Janeway fic.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 15:34:40 -0400
48Teanna
Teanna's second-person story, "Tom Collins Never. . ." was a highlight of VOY fiction this year. I'd like to see Teanna pursue some of the Janeway/Seven possibilities that she so tantalizingly raises in this piece. In the meantime, I'll have to content myself with her equally interesting Jane Austen fanfic.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Fri, 25 Apr 2003 15:44:35 -0400
35nostalgia
I especially enjoyed Stockholm Syndrome, and hope to see more like it.

I enjoyed Sara's TNG fic this year. She manages to see a spark in characters I've never thought of as particularly interesting.

37Quills
I really like the Gateway story... This author is remarkable

37Quills
This story is absolutely wonderful. A masterful blend of intrigue, adventure and romance. I combines new and established characters into a complex storyline and I can't wait for Quills to finish it.
-- Ola Wojciechowska - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 07:32:57 -0400
37Quills
This is an engrossing story, combining time travel, the Temperal Cold War, and the character development of the Enterprise crew. A complex, Trek story which is well written and thoughtfully told. I'm enjoying it!
-- myst123 - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 08:01:59 -0400
20Kat
I loved "Tourniquet." The way Kat used the present tense in the story lent it a mood I found very striking. The author is skilled with the way she works with the narrative with good use of vivid details to draw us in. The story is centered on Janeway and Beverly Crusher and I love the subtle way they slowly reveal themselves to each other. There is an interesting characterization of Picard here too.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:01:21 -0400
21Kath (Trekkigrrl)
I loved Kath's first story posted to ASC, "Blast from the Past." The story was hilarious from beginning to end with a delightful Chapel I hope to see again and had a great twist and a killer last line. It was great fun and an impressive debut piece. Just thinking about some of the lines still has the power to break me up. Particularly: "Green...Not Blue?" Bwwwaaaahhhhaaaa!!!! Not to be missed. Raunchy and clever with very appealing characters.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:02:45 -0400
24Ke Roth
Her epic is written deftly with an evident affection for all the Next Gen characters and includes an intriguing original character as well.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:03:31 -0400
27Kyra Cullinan
I found Kyra Cullihan's two short-shorts in Deep Space 9 and Next Gen memorable and striking stories. Both the DS9 "Fly Away" and the TNG "The Speed of Sound" are remarkable for their lyricism and how they manage to pack a wealth of emotion and insight so economically into such small spaces. I loved "Fly Away's" portrait of Vic Fontaine. I like the way she conveys how Vic is at the mercy of his programming and some of the irony of him existing essentially in a box in a bar. The P/C "The Speed of Sound" is also extraordinary. It's a story about language itself, his, hers and what's lost between the translation.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:04:38 -0400
35nostalgia
Nostalgia is definitely one of our best ASC newbies. Her ENT fanfic is particularly impressive. She manages to dig beneath the glossy surface of the characters, giving us their edgier, darker side. She does so with a beautiful, lyrical style with plenty of lines to savor. You have to admire someone who goes out there on a tight rope, taking risks with characterization and style, and yet always keeps her balance. "Sloth" is an amazing look at T'Pol's thoughts, especially about Archer. Her Archer in the very angsty "The Needs of the Many" is no less remarkable. Though my favorite ENT story of hers has to be the ones featuring her fascinating Hoshi in "Vox Luvenium" and "A Way with Words." Nostalgia's lyrical style and exquisite way with words works wonders in that pair of stories. She also has outstanding stories in other series. Her "Stockholm Syndrome" is a fascinating take on the Janeway/Seven relationship and her DS9 Section 31 story "People Like Us" is brilliant.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:06:29 -0400
36not jenny
Her story made effective use of the second person and for the future tense and was lyrical and stylish.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:08:12 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara Goose is a graceful new voice in Next Gen and Deep Space Nine fiction who has a great grip on the canon characters. Her stories have all been short, often very short, and within their confines she expresses a wealth of emotion and gives us interesting insights. From the UST of "Another Glance" to her interesting speculations on the nature of the symbiont in "Survival Mechanism" to a look at the dynamic bet Troi and Worf in "A New Kind of Ordinary" to name a few, a Sara story both evokes a wealth of emotion and makes you think. I love that in an author and look forward to more from her.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:10:28 -0400
43Stephanie Watson
I liked her story "Closet Space" quite a bit. It created a wonderfully evocative voice and was very fun.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:11:08 -0400
47Taryn Eve
"The First Stone" was one of the most moving ENT stories I read this year with an great grasp of the characters. "Hoshi's Box" is charming and "Hermes Last Message" was an interesting and chilling short, and "Pandora's Box" captured Reed quite nicely.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:12:47 -0400
48Teanna
Teanna did the old UST well and I loved her inebriated Seven in "Tom Collins Never..."
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 13:13:20 -0400
49T'Guess
This is one newbie who is very talented. Her story "Checkmate" was hilarious and I know from what she's posted since she can do more than make you laugh. Welcome to ASC, T'Guess.

Quills is one of the best fanfic authors out there and I am proud to say that I eagerly await each new update, each new story, each new contest. I feel Quills deserves the best new author award!

great author, keeps characters in "character" well as well as interesting plotting and action.

36not jenny
not jenny drew me into a series that I don't usually read (Voyager) for a character (Janeway, post-Endgame) that I wouldn't normally read. With excellent characterisation, she shows how Janeway's rise is also her fall, and how too much success can domesticate a maverick. Great first effort.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:17:58 -0400
35nostalgia
In "Stockholm Syndrome", nostalgia gives us probably the most chilling portrayal of Seven of Nine in a long time, and that's saying quite a bit. Everything that Seven does in the story fits into canon (up to the point, of course, where it all goes dark) and the characterisation also fits perfectly with what we saw onscreen, to a chilling T. My favourite of hers in this first year.
-- Paula Stiles - Mon, 28 Apr 2003 22:20:38 -0400
27Kyra Cullinan
I was very impressed by Kyra's 2 fics this year, the excellent P/C "Speed of Sound" and the Vic Fontaine story "I'll Fly Away." This author has a good feel for language and expressive imagery.
-- Rocky - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 14:03:27 -0400

I enjoyed Tori's forays into DS9 this year and am looking forward to more from her in the future

I always enjoy Sara's fic. She often takes ordinary situations and looks at them from a viewpoint that I don't normally see. Then she ends the fics with a 'gotcha' that keeps you thinking about them for days. Such a treat.

Nostalgia writes fantastic and stylish stories. Good enough to make me interested in Enterprise, which is not a simple task. It's angsty, but not over the top. It's crushing by being so beautiful. And her stories break my heart every time.
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:47:17 -0400
41Sara Goose
Saragoose has a way of getting under my skin with her stories. You don't really realize how much until she *crushes* you with a sentence or a word, just when you least expect it. Not always in a sad way, but many times with humour and joy. I'm a big fan. :-)
-- Elise - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 18:53:34 -0400
21Kath (Trekkigrrl)
LOL! Kath showed a very different Christine from the usual, canon one. Young, loud and feisty and someone I wouldn't mind getting to know. Here's hoping for a sequel in the coming year.
-- Paula Stiles - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 21:56:58 -0400
27Kyra Cullinan
Fly Away was excellent, simply because you chose to focus on a DS9 character that has a lot of mixed feelings surrounding him and make it work for a lot of people. I loved the tiny little details about Vic's life that makes him seem so real as a person, yet at the same time you know it is the ultimate facade. The Speed of Sound is also notable for being the only P/C fanfic I ever dared to read--and liked. Keep it coming.
-- Tori Morris - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 22:27:06 -0400
32Mistress_Siana
Good stuff, because I've never seen anyone focus attention on Damar and his actual family. I like fiction that focuses on the characters in DS9 who haven't had so much written about them, so I'm hoping you'll do another.
-- Tori Morris - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 22:29:43 -0400
35nostalgia
EZRI N JULIAN 4 EVA! *cough* Excuse me, that was so needing to be said. Nostalgia's probably the only person in existance who will willingly drag me to read Miles/Julian slash, because it's good, even if I don't like the paring. So I'm guessing that if you're into the paring, she'll rock your socks and steal your eggs and make you dance until the morning's light. (Am I getting credit for poetic imagery? No. Sucks a duck.)Plus, she wrote angsty Sisko. And I am all.about.the.Sisko.
-- Tori Morris - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 22:35:12 -0400
41Sara Goose
Sara is the world's best Miles/Kira writer, because that's canon, and because--well, she makes me forget that I squick out every time I watch that episode, let alone liking the idea. And yet, there I go again. But what's also great is that she has range for characters--Ezri, Worf, Kira, Ben...all of them! Yay for Range! Oh, and her non-DS9 stuff is pretty spiffy too.
-- Tori Morris - Tue, 29 Apr 2003 22:41:56 -0400
